8' x 8' Round Oriental Rug | Tabriz Design Ivory Field & Ruby Red Border | Wool and Silk

True circles are the hardest shape to weave well, because every row of knots changes length and the drawing has to stay symmetrical the whole way around. This 8' x 8' round Oriental rug holds its circle cleanly, with the ruby red border ring running evenly around an ivory field and the fringe tied by hand all the way around the circumference. The pile is wool with silk accents on a cotton foundation, so the flat sheen you see on the flower heads in the close-up photos is real silk catching the light rather than a finishing treatment. It is new, never used, and every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity documenting its materials, size and weave.

Design and Motifs

The field carries an all-over Tabriz drawing with no central medallion: thin curving vines radiate outward and connect large shaded palmettes, small 8 petal rosettes, tulip-like buds and slim lanceolate leaves. Because the layout is repeated around a circle rather than along a rectangle, the vine work mirrors itself on every axis, which is why the detail shots read as neatly symmetrical from any direction you stand. The ruby red main border carries a procession of ivory and sage palmettes linked by a scrolling stem, with a small cartouche-like flower head centered between each pair. Two narrow sage green guard bands, filled with tiny alternating floral cartouches outlined in black, separate the border from the field and from the outer ivory edge. Outlining throughout is done in dark charcoal, which is what keeps every petal crisp against the pale ground.

The Ivory, Ruby Red and Sage Palette

The field is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream than white, and it is left largely open so the eye reads the vine work as drawing on paper rather than as a crowded pattern. Against it the main border is a deep ruby red with a wine undertone, dark enough to frame the circle strongly from across a room. The flowers themselves are where the color range widens: salmon pink and rose in the rosette centers, pale pistachio and sage green in the leaves, gold and apricot in the palmette petals, cinnamon brown and aubergine in the shading, with small touches of teal blue and chalk white. Silk is used on the highlights, so those pinks and creams shift lighter or deeper depending on where you stand and how the light falls, an effect visible in the low-angle photographs.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was hand-knotted in China, in a workshop weaving the classical Tabriz repertoire: the palmette and vine field, the cartouche guard bands and the tightly drawn floral border all come out of that tradition. Chinese workshops built their reputation on exactly this kind of fine floral work, and the execution here is clean, with even knot rows, a level clipped pile and a circumference that stays true rather than wobbling. If you are weighing the differences between weaving traditions before you buy, our guide on Persian rugs vs Oriental rugs explains what changes with origin and what does not. At 8 feet across, this is a piece for a round entry hall, a rotunda, or a room built around a circular dining table, where a rectangle would fight the architecture and a circle finishes it.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
