9'10" x 13'11" Persian Isfahan Rug | Diamond Lattice Panel Design | Wool & Silk Pile, Never Used

This 9'10" x 13'11" rug is an unusual piece of Persian Isfahan drawing: instead of the familiar single court medallion on an open field, the weaver filled the entire ground with a lattice of diamond compartments, each one carrying a different miniature repeat. It has never been on a floor, the 1/4" wool and silk pile stands full and even edge to edge, and the fringes and selvedges are untouched. At just under 10 by 14 feet it sits squarely in the most useful room size we carry, and buyers comparing 10x14 Persian rugs will notice how much more is happening here than in a standard medallion piece. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and knotting.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The full-length overhead photograph was taken under bright studio lights and reads a shade lighter and pinker than the rug actually is. The close-up images show the true tone: a deep, warm red field with clear ivory and light blue. Judge the color from the detail shots.

Design and Motifs

The field is organized as a diagonal lattice, ivory vine lines crossing to form rows of diamond compartments across the full width of the rug. No two neighbors repeat: one holds a grid of small 4 petal rosettes, the next a scatter of white star flowers, another a dense field of tiny crosses and buds on navy, another a plain red panel framed by a fine inner line. Down the center axis sits a navy diamond medallion enclosing an octagonal light blue cartouche with a single rosette at its heart, flanked by 4 herringbone arrow bands and small cypress sprays, with two smaller diamond finials answering it above and below. The 4 corners carry ivory cartouches drawn with curling boteh, and the main border abandons a running vine in favor of its own compartment scheme, alternating panels of florets, diagonal stripes and diamond medallions between narrow ivory guard bands.

Colors in Detail

The dominant note is a warm madder red that carries the lattice ground and most of the border panels. Against it the weaver set ivory for the lattice lines, the corner cartouches and the star flower compartments, so the drawing stays legible across a 14 foot length. Cool relief comes from two blues used deliberately apart: a pale sky blue that fills whole compartments and softens the middle of the field, and a deep navy reserved for the medallion, the smaller finials and several border panels. Scattered through the small motifs are rose pink, dusty aubergine, camel gold and a muted sage green, each appearing in single knots rather than blocks, which is what gives the surface its shimmer when you walk past it. The silk in the pile catches light in the ivory and pale blue passages, so the rug shifts between a soft overall rose tone and a strong red depending on where you stand.

Isfahan Weaving and Quality

Isfahan sits in central Persia and its reputation rests on drawing rather than size: the Safavid workshops of the 16th century set a standard for curved line and precise repeat that the city's weavers still work to. A compartment design like this one is the harder test, because every one of the dozens of diamonds has to hold its own miniature pattern at the same scale and the lattice has to stay true over almost 14 feet without drifting. That level of small detail only resolves at a high knot count, and the reverse photograph shows how tight and regular the knotting is across the back. The pile is a wool and silk blend on a cotton foundation, clipped low at 1/4" so the outlines stay crisp, and the rug lies flat and square with straight sides and even, hand-finished selvedges.
