10' x 14'1" Persian Isfahan Rug | Cobalt Blue All-Over Floral | Wool & Silk Pile, Never Used
This is a formal central Persian city piece at a size that actually fits an American room: 10' x 14'1" of cobalt blue ground carrying a full all-over floral drawing, with a red and ivory rosette medallion floating at the center and ivory spandrels filling the 4 corners. The pile is wool with silk worked into the highlights, clipped short at 1/4", which is why the vine work in the photographs reads with such clean edges rather than blurring together. It has never been on a floor, so the pile still stands at full height and the ivory has not greyed anywhere. Among 10 x 14 Persian rugs this is the drawing-led end of the market, and every piece we sell leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and dimensions.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The daylight close-up of the pile reads slightly more violet than the rug actually is. The true field color is the cobalt blue you see in the full overhead shot and the angled floor photograph.
Design and Motifs
The field is a continuous all-over floral lattice of curling vines, palmettes, lotus blossoms and split-leaf arabesques, drawn so the pattern flows through the medallion instead of stopping at it. At the center sits an 8 petal rosette in brick red and ivory, ringed by a serrated star surround and a halo of pale blue leaf forms. The 4 corner spandrels are ivory, filled with fine red and blue scrolling vine that gives the eye somewhere to rest against the density of the field. The border system is layered: a narrow ivory guard stripe at the outer edge, a wide navy main band carrying alternating upright palmettes and floral sprays, then a second ivory meander stripe and a thin blue line framing the field. Both ends finish in the original flat kilim and hand-tied fringe.
Color Palette in Detail
The ground is a saturated cobalt blue that deepens toward navy where the pile lies away from the light, which is what makes this one of the more usable navy blue Persian rugs in a room with dark wood or heavy upholstery. Over that ground the weaver worked three separate lighter values: a soft sky blue in the leaves and cloud bands, a chalky ivory in the outlined stems and small blossoms, and a warm camel gold that appears in the buds and the smaller rosette centers. Brick red and rust carry the accent work, concentrated in the medallion, the star flowers scattered through the field and the vine of the ivory spandrels. There are small touches of sage green and a deeper wine tone in the border blossoms. The silk highlights sit mainly in the ivory and pale blue passages, so those areas shift in brightness as you walk around the rug while the cobalt ground stays steady.
Isfahan Origin and Weaving Quality
Isfahan sits in central Persia and has been a workshop city since the Safavid court established looms there in the 16th century. Its reputation has never rested on thickness or color alone but on drawing: the curved line, the unbroken vine, the ability to turn a palmette without the outline stepping. That only works at a high knot count on a taut cotton foundation, which is exactly how this piece is built, with the short wool and silk pile holding the fine detail you can see in the corner and medallion close-ups. The reverse shows a tight, even knot face across the whole width with no pulled edges or crooked rows, the sign of an urban loom rather than village work. If you want the background on how the city's workshops and their master weavers are graded, our complete guide to Isfahan rugs walks through it, and the rest of the group is in our Persian Isfahan rug collection.
