9'4" x 13'4" Persian Isfahan Rug | All Over Floral Vine on Red | Wool & Silk Pile | Brand New
This 9'4" x 13'4" Persian Isfahan rug is a room-size floral piece drawn in the classic city manner, with no central medallion and a field that runs edge to edge in one continuous vine system. The pile is wool and silk clipped to about 1/4", low enough that every stem and leaf tip reads cleanly, and the silk catches light in the ivory blossoms as you walk past. It sits on a cotton foundation, the selvedges are tight and the ends are straight, as the back photograph shows. The rug is brand new and has never been used, so the pile stands full and the colors are exactly as woven. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity that records origin, materials, size and hand-knotted construction.
Design and Motifs
The field is a true all over composition: slender curved vines split, cross and loop back on themselves, carrying lotus palmettes, 8 petal rosettes, serrated acanthus leaves and small cypress-like sprays. The drawing is mirrored on both the long and short axes, so the pattern balances without ever repeating a large block outright, and a pair of small dark blue palmettes marks the center line where a medallion would otherwise sit. A narrow reciprocal inner guard of tiny boxed flowerheads separates the field from the main border, which repeats larger palmettes linked by a turning vine and is itself framed by ivory guard stripes of leaf and blossom. The corners resolve cleanly, a detail that only happens when the design is plotted properly before the first knot goes in. Detail photographs show how the curved line is held at this knot count, with the vine tapering to a single knot width in places.
A Red Field Framed in Dark Gray Blue
The ground is a warm tomato red, clear and even across the whole 13'4" length with the gentle tonal movement that hand-dyed wool gives. Against it the vine work is drawn mostly in ivory and soft cream, with the silk-touched blossoms reading a shade brighter than the surrounding wool. Inside the palmettes sit small notes of sage and olive green, dusty salmon, pale sky blue and a deep near-black navy that outlines petals and gives the whole field its definition. The main border shifts to dark gray blue, a slate tone rather than a hard navy, which cools the red and keeps a rug this large from feeling heavy; the ivory guard stripes on either side of it act as a bright seam between border and field. Red, ivory and slate blue repeat in the small border flowers, so the palette closes on itself rather than introducing a fourth family of color.
Isfahan: The Weaving Town and the Quality
Isfahan sits in central Persia and has been a workshop town since the Safavid court established weaving ateliers there in the 16th century. Its reputation has never rested on thick pile or bold geometry but on drawing: the curved line, the flowing vine and the precision of a repeat that has to close correctly at all 4 corners, none of which works unless the knot count supports it. That is why Persian Isfahan rugs are woven low and tight on a cotton foundation with wool and silk in the pile, exactly as this one is. At 9'4" x 13'4" it is a formal room size, large enough to carry a full seating group or a 10 seat table, and it is finished with straight sides and even ends that make it lie flat from the first day.
