9'2" x 11'10" Brown Jaipur Oriental Rug | Antique All Over Floral Design | Hand-Knotted Wool

This is a brand new, never used hand-knotted room size piece measuring 9'2" x 11'10", woven in Jaipur with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. The drawing follows an antique all over floral model, so the rug reads like an old estate piece while the wool is still full and fresh, with the pile height and clean selvedges you can see in the close-up photos. At 110" x 142" it sits comfortably in the standard 9x12 Oriental rugs footprint, which is the size most buyers want under a full sofa group or a 10 seat table. Every rug we ship, including this one, comes with our certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the field carries a true all over design, a loosely scrolling vine lattice that repeats across the whole brown ground and holds large 8 and 10 petal rosettes, lotus palmettes, serrated leaves and small cruciform quatrefoil sprigs. The drawing is semi-geometric rather than finely curvilinear, with the leaf tips and palmette edges stepped in the manner of antique Indian and Sultanabad weaving. Three borders frame it: a broad rust main border filled with ivory cartouche-shaped palmettes and olive leaf forms, flanked by narrow floral meander guards and an outer reciprocal rosette stripe that you can see clearly in the corner photograph. Because the repeat is all over rather than centered, the rug stays balanced when furniture covers part of the field, which is exactly why this layout outlasts medallion designs in real rooms.

Color Palette: Cocoa Brown, Rust and Sage

The field is a cocoa to taupe brown that shifts slightly across the width, a natural abrash from hand-dyed wool that keeps the large open ground from looking flat. Against it the vinework is drawn in soft gold and ivory, the big rosettes alternate between cream, buttery olive gold, sage green and brick red, and small terracotta rosette clusters punctuate the empty spaces. The main border is the strongest note in the rug, a deep rust red that pulls warmth toward the edges, while the ivory guard stripes give the whole piece a clear outline on a dark floor. Sage and celadon green appear in small, deliberate doses inside the palmettes, and the undyed ivory fringe finishes it cleanly. Among brown Oriental rugs this is the warm, earthy end of the range rather than the grey or charcoal end, so it sits well with walnut furniture, leather, cream upholstery and oak floors.

Jaipur Weaving and Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the main hand-knotting centers in India, and India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made. We say that with confidence: the workshops there have inherited the Agra tradition of copying antique room size designs, they spin durable local wool, and they weave on cotton warps at a density that holds the pattern crisply, which is visible in the back and fold photos. This is honest village and workshop production, not a machine piece and not a tufted one, every knot tied by hand. If you are weighing it against a Persian piece, our guide on what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug explains where the price difference actually comes from. For a 9'2" x 11'10" floor in perfect, unused condition, this one delivers antique looks with brand new wool underfoot.
