9'2" x 11'10" Oushak Design Rug | Hand-Knotted in India | Pale Blue Field with Gold and Rust | New
This is a new, never used hand-knotted rug in the Oushak idiom, measuring 9'2" x 11'10" with a wool pile on a cotton foundation. The whole piece is built around restraint: a pale blue field, an ivory main border, and drawing carried out in soft gold, honey and a few deeper rust accents. Nothing shouts. Run your hand across it and the pile feels dry and springy rather than slick, which is what good handspun wool does, and the back photo with the ruler shows the knot rows and the hand-tied fringe exactly as they came off the loom. Every rug we sell, including this one, ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. Instead the field carries an all over arrangement read in columns: large lobed palmettes flanked by octagonal rosettes with 8 petal stars inside them, hooked vine fragments that curl back on themselves like question marks, and small 4 pointed blossoms and crosses scattered through the open ground. A tall serrated crown motif anchors the top of the field and a pair of broad fan shaped blossoms closes the bottom, so the composition has a clear top and bottom rather than being purely repeating. The spandrels are filled with jagged leaf forms that step outward toward the corners. Framing all of it is a wide ivory main border of linked S scrolls, small shield cartouches and rosettes, with narrow striped guard stripes on both sides of it that read as a diagonal barber pole line. The drawing is deliberately relaxed and slightly angular, exactly the quality that makes the Oushak style such a comfortable fit in a transitional or traditional room.
Color: Pale Blue, Gold and Rust
The field is a light blue with a faint grey-green undertone, the kind of pale sea glass tone that shifts with the light and photographs slightly cooler in the close-ups than in the full view. Against that ground the drawing is worked almost entirely in warm tones: butter gold in the large palmettes, a deeper old gold in the outlines, honey and camel in the hooked vines, and a few passages of true rust brown in the crown motif and in the border cartouches that give the eye somewhere to land. Pale ivory and cream do the quiet work, filling the rosette centers, the main border ground and the guard stripes, and small touches of soft blue are repeated up into the border so the field color is echoed all the way to the edge. The overall effect is a pastel palette with real warmth in it, which is why it sits so easily with oak floors, linen upholstery and blue and white porcelain. Origin and Weaving Quality
The Oushak design comes out of western Anatolia, where weavers built large scale rugs around open fields and loose, generous drawing. This piece is a contemporary interpretation of that tradition, hand-knotted in India, and that is worth saying plainly: India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, with experienced weavers, well spun wool and vegetal-tone dyeing that gives the softened pastel look seen here. It is an Oriental rug in the proper sense of the term, knotted row by row on a cotton warp with a medium pile height that holds the pattern crisply while still taking traffic. At 9'2" x 11'10" it covers a standard large room with the pattern readable from a doorway, which is the format most buyers searching 9x12 Oriental rugs are after.
