9'2" x 13' Peshawar Ziegler Rug | Beige Field with Green & Rust Florals | Brand New, Never Used

This 9'2" x 13' rug was hand-knotted in Peshawar in northwest Pakistan, in the Ziegler manner: a soft, open, all-over floral drawing on a warm beige ground, worked in natural wool on a cotton foundation. It has never been on a floor. The pile is full and evenly clipped, the selvages are tight, the fringes are untrimmed and original, and the back reads clean and regular from corner to corner, as the folded photo shows. Every piece we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine hand-knotted Oriental rug, not a machine-made or tufted copy. At just over 9 by 13 feet, it is squarely in the territory of large 9x13 area rugs that anchor a full seating group or a long dining table without crowding the walls.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design built from large lobed palmettes, open rosettes with layered petals, serrated acanthus leaves and long curling vine scrolls that wander rather than repeat in a rigid grid. Look closely at the field and small red bird-like flourishes appear between the blossoms, a quiet detail that shows up in the close photos of the corner and the border. The drawing is deliberately generous in scale, which is what gives a Ziegler its relaxed, decorative reading compared with a tightly packed floral. The rug is framed by a wide ivory main border of gold vinework and alternating green and rose palmettes, flanked on both sides by slate blue guard stripes carrying a running chain of cream and pink blossoms with tiny red centers. Corners are resolved properly, with the border pattern turning cleanly rather than being cut off.

A Beige Field with Sage Green, Rust and Slate Blue

The ground is a warm sand beige, closer to ivory where the light catches the pile and closer to soft camel in the shaded passages, so the field never reads flat. Against it the palmettes are drawn in muted sage and celadon green, the deeper of the two greens holding the largest blossoms in the field. Accents run in brick rust and a clear red, used sparingly on petal centers, small buds and those little bird motifs, just enough to keep the neutral palette awake. Dusty rose and blush pink fill the secondary rosettes, soft gold carries the vinework and the outer border ground, and a dusty slate blue holds the guard stripes and a scattering of small field flowers. The overall effect is a neutral, low-contrast rug that sits comfortably with cream, oatmeal, walnut and aged brass, with only the blue borders and the rust flecks acting as color punctuation.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Peshawar, near the Khyber Pass in northwest Pakistan, has become one of the most important hand-knotting centers in the world for large decorative rugs, and the Ziegler group is what the city is known for. Weavers there work on upright looms with a cotton warp and weft and hand-spun natural wool, and the wool is the point: it is dense, springy and slightly lustrous, which is why the close-up of the rolled pile shows that soft sheen rather than a dry, chalky surface. This piece is a workshop weave, with straight sides, square corners and even knotting across a 13 foot length, which is harder to hold than it sounds at this size. The pile has enough body to take traffic in a living room or dining room for decades, and because the rug is brand new and never used, the full original height of the wool is still there.
