9'4" x 16' Persian Esfahan Rug | Wool | Oversize
A long rectangular carpet, 9'4" x 16', hand-knotted in wool in Persia to an Esfahan drawing. At a glance it is a pale rug: a field the colour of unbleached wool, covered edge to edge in fine floral scrollwork, with a single dark medallion holding the centre and a broad olive border closing it in. The narrow proportion, nearly twice as long as it is wide, suits a room read lengthwise.
Design
The centre is a cusped star medallion of ten points, filled with small palmettes and rosettes around a single ivory flower head, with a pendant lobe reaching north and south along the long axis. Around it the field runs as a continuous system of thin vines, each curve ending in a palmette, a lotus or a serrated leaf, with four quarter medallions set in the corners as spandrels. The traditional layout is symmetrical on both axes and drawn at a small scale, so the detail only resolves when you stand over it. The main border carries a meandering vine with alternating flower heads and curved leaves, held between a narrow ivory guard stripe and an outer pale blue band of its own.
Colour
The ground is a warm beige, closer to camel where the pile lies away from the light and closer to cream where it lies toward it. Against it the drawing is worked in two blues, a near-black indigo for the outlines and a clear mid teal for the flower centres, with dusty rose, soft gold and a rust brown filling the smaller motifs. The border breaks the scheme deliberately: an olive green ground, cooler and greyer than the field, which pushes the pale centre forward and keeps the whole thing from reading as one tone.
Making
Hand-knotted in wool pile, with the reverse showing the pattern clearly enough to read the drawing from the back. The table dates it to the 1970s, which places it among our semi-antique stock, and the condition is given as excellent. Ivory fringes finish both ends, with a short woven kilim band above the knot line, visible in the corner photographs. It is one of the larger pieces in our stock.
