9'5" x 11'11" Indian Ziegler Rug | Gold and Beige All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Wool, New

This is a new, never used hand-knotted rug in the Ziegler manner, woven in India in natural wool on a cotton foundation and measuring 9'5" x 11'11". The whole piece is built around a single tonal idea: a soft gold and beige field carrying an all-over floral vine, framed by a wide gold main border with brown and ivory drawing. It is a generous room-size format that sits comfortably in the 9x12 rug class, wide enough to run under a full seating group or a 10 seat table with the chairs still on the wool. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is genuinely hand-knotted, along with its origin, materials and measurements.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. Instead the weaver used an all-over floral design, a lattice of thin curving vines that climbs the length of the field and repeats on a large, relaxed scale. Hung on that vinework are broad 8 and 12 petal rosettes, split palmettes, shield shaped blossoms with scalloped outlines, small tulip sprays and pairs of narrow serrated leaves, all drawn loosely enough that the field reads as open rather than busy. The field is enclosed by a narrow ivory inner guard with a repeating 4 square flower chain, then the wide main border of heavy scrolling vine and cloud band forms in brown over ivory, then an outer gold band of small stylized blossoms. The close detail photographs show how the drawing is deliberately softened at the edges of each motif, which is what gives this design its washed, long-settled look rather than a crisp modern outline.

The Gold, Beige and Olive Palette

The ground is a pale wheat beige that warms toward straw gold where the light catches the pile, and almost everything drawn on it belongs to the same family: honey gold, antique gold, light camel and a deeper amber in the main border. The rosettes and palmettes are picked out in a muted olive green and a soft moss tone that only reads as green once you are standing over the rug, which is what keeps the whole surface from going flat. Against that, the darkest notes are a cocoa brown and a greyish chestnut used for the vine outlines, the cloud band shapes in the border and the small leaf tips scattered through the field. The outer band deepens to a saturated marigold gold, and the ivory guard stripes and cream cotton fringe give the edges a clean break. It is a warm neutral rug with no hard contrast anywhere, so it works over oak, walnut and pale stone floors and sits quietly under existing upholstery.

Woven in India in the Ziegler Tradition

The Ziegler style descends from the late 19th century workshops that reworked classical all-over floral drawings in softer, lighter palettes for Western rooms, and today India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work in that idiom is made. We say that with confidence: the Indian weaving centers now hold the skilled labor, the good hand-spun wool and the finishing expertise, and this piece shows it. The knotting is even across all 9'5" of width, the selvages are tight, the fringe is hand-tied and the pile has the dense, springy handle you can see in the folded corner and rolled edge photographs. For a buyer comparing this with a village or city piece from Persia, our guide to the difference between a Persian and an Oriental rug explains exactly where the terms separate. This one is honestly what it says it is: a brand new, perfect condition, hand-knotted wool rug made in India.
