9'6" x 13'5" Persian Kashan Rug | Pearl Pink Floral Medallion Field | Ivory Border, Excellent Condition
This is a full room-size central Persian piece in the softest colorway the town works in: a pearl pink field, an ivory main border, and a narrow teal and navy medallion that sits quietly at the center instead of dominating the rug. At 9'6" x 13'5" it covers a true 10 by 13 floor plan, and it belongs to the most recognizable group in the trade, Persian Kashan rugs, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a short 3/8" pile that keeps the drawing crisp. The pile is full and even end to end, the ivory fringe is clean, and the back reads tight and regular, as image 6 shows against the rule. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity. Buyers shopping 10x13 Persian Kashan rugs rarely find this field color, which is why it is worth a close look.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The first studio image renders the field as a deeper, more saturated red than the rug actually is. The floor photographs, images 2 through 5, are the accurate reading: the ground is a soft pearl pink with a rose cast, lighter and cooler in person than the lead photo suggests. If the exact shade matters to your room, work from the floor shots and ask us for additional daylight photos before you order.
Design and Motifs
The field is an all-over floral lattice rather than an open medallion ground, which is the harder of the two Kashan formulas to draw well. Curving vines carry rosettes, serrated palmettes, split leaves and small feathery lanceolate leaves across the entire field, each element outlined in navy so the pattern reads clearly from standing height. At the center sits a slim lobed medallion with an 8 petal rosette at its heart, finished top and bottom with small pendants. The 4 corners carry quarter spandrels in ivory, filled with the same scrolling vine as the field, and their stepped outlines frame the middle of the rug without closing it in. The border system runs 5 bands: a wide ivory main border of alternating palmettes and cusped rosettes linked by a continuous vine, flanked by navy guard stripes of running flowerheads, with narrow reciprocal minor stripes at the outer edge. Image 5 shows how cleanly the border turns the corner, the pattern resolving instead of being cut off, which is the sign of a properly cartooned workshop piece.
Pearl Pink, Ivory and the Teal Accents
The field color is the reason to own this rug. Instead of the hard tomato red most people picture, the ground is a pearl pink with a warm rose undertone that shifts toward salmon where light crosses the pile and toward a dusty blush against the nap. It is a color that sits comfortably with cream walls, oak and walnut floors, brass, and upholstery in oatmeal, celadon or soft gray. Against it, the drawing is worked in ivory and a pale buttery gold, which carries most of the floral mass, with navy outlining for definition and a distinct teal blue-green reserved for the medallion field and scattered leaves. The main border is a clear ivory, almost parchment, with brick red, teal and chocolate brown details in the palmettes, and the outer edge of the rug is finished in a plain rose band that frames the whole composition. Small touches of terracotta and olive appear in the corner spandrels. The overall effect is light, warm and low contrast: a large rug that will not darken a room.
Kashan: Weaving Town and Quality
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that produced some of the most famous classical rugs in existence. The town is known for two things: soft, lustrous local wool that takes dye with a faint sheen, and a disciplined drawing tradition in which every curve is plotted on a cartoon before a single knot is tied. This piece shows both. The wool has that characteristic low gloss, the knotting is fine enough to carry curved vines and small rosettes without the lines going angular, and the short clipped pile holds the detail sharp. Weavers here work on a cotton warp and weft, which is what keeps a rug this size lying flat and square over a long life. Kashan is also the pattern most Americans already know without realizing it: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. This one is the same tradition in a gentler, more decorative palette, finished in excellent condition with full even pile.
