9'8" x 13'4" Persian Tabriz Design Rug | Red & Dark Indigo All-Over Floral | Excellent Condition
This is a full room-size Persian rug, 9'8" x 13'4", hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation and drawn in the classical Tabriz manner: a lobed indigo medallion floating on a deep crimson field that is packed, edge to edge, with flowering vine. The pile stands a true 3/8" and remains even across the whole surface, the ends and sides are complete, and the condition is excellent, which on a rug this large matters more than almost anything else, because a 13 foot length shows every flaw. It covers the footprint most dining tables and sofa groupings need, so if you are shopping 10x13 Persian rugs, this one gives you genuine hand-knotted drawing rather than a machine-made approximation. Every rug we ship, this one included, comes with our certificate of authenticity.
Design and Motifs
At the center sits a dark indigo medallion with stepped lobes and long pendants reaching toward each end, and inside it a brick red cartouche carrying an 8 petal rosette surrounded by small palmettes and curling leaves. Around the medallion the field never rests: large curved palmettes, boteh paisley forms, serrated leaves, split arabesques and tiny multi-petal blossoms are linked by a thin vine that keeps the whole composition flowing rather than static. Four corner spandrels in the same indigo answer the medallion and square off the field. The main border is a wide indigo band of alternating palmettes and leafy sprays, hemmed on both sides by ivory guard stripes patterned with small X shaped rosettes, a detail you can see clearly along the fringe end. Each repeat is drawn freehand by the weaver rather than stamped, so the paisleys on one side of the medallion differ slightly from their partners on the other, which is exactly the signature of a hand-knotted piece.
The Red and Dark Indigo Palette
The field is a deep saturated crimson, closer to a cool ruby than to brick or orange, and it carries a soft wool sheen that shifts a shade lighter or darker depending on where you stand. Against it the medallion, spandrels and main border read dark indigo, nearly black in low light, which is what gives the rug its weight and makes it work under dark wood furniture. The detail work supplies the rest of the range: clean ivory outlines and guard stripes, sky blue and steel blue in the palmette interiors, olive and moss green in the leaves, gold and warm apricot in the flower hearts, plus touches of rose and chocolate brown. A narrow red outer stripe frames everything, and the fringe is natural ivory cotton. If you are collecting in this family, it sits comfortably with other red and burgundy Persian rugs while the indigo keeps it from going warm-only.
The Tabriz Tradition and the Weave
Tabriz, in northwest Persia, set the template this rug follows: a central lobed medallion, matching corner spandrels, and a curvilinear floral field in which every line bends. That drawing style is demanding, because a curved vine only stays smooth if the knot count is high enough to describe the curve, and the workshops around Tabriz measure their fineness in Raj, knots counted across a 2.75 inch span of the width. Look at the back in the final photograph and you can see the weave for yourself: small, regular knots set in tidy rows on a cotton warp and weft, with the dyes carried cleanly through to the reverse. The wool was spun for durability rather than softness alone, which is why a rug of this size still lies flat and shows even pile after years of use. It is a workshop-quality floral Persian in a size that is genuinely hard to find in this condition.
