9'8" x 13'5" Persian Kashan Rug | Kerman All-Over Arabesque Design | Light Green Field | Excellent Condition

A light green field of this size is unusual, and it is the first thing you notice about this 9'8" x 13'5" piece. The drawing is a flowing Kerman style all-over floral, the weave is a classic Persian Kashan construction, and the proportions put it squarely in the practical range of 10x13 Persian rugs that cover a large seating group or a full dining set without crowding the walls. The pile is fine wool on a cotton foundation, the handle is supple rather than stiff, and the condition is excellent with full even pile, straight sides and clean original ends. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and measurements.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The full overhead studio photograph was shot under strong directional lighting, so the lower portion of the field reads grey and taupe there. That is a lighting gradient in the photograph only. The true color is the light pistachio green visible in the floor photographs, and the field is consistent from end to end with no fade, no abrash band and no wear.

Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. Instead the weaver worked an all-over floral layout built from long arabesque vines that curl into big open volutes, each one closed with a palmette or a lotus head. The field mirrors perfectly along the central length axis and again across the width, so the eye reads a loose diamond of denser blossoms through the middle while the four corners resolve into the same scrolling vine. Detail photographs show 8 petal rosettes, split leaf islimi, small stemmed carnations and tiny 5 point stars tucked into the empty green ground. The outer band is drawn as a continuation of the same scroll rather than a hard framed border, a device the best Kerman rugs use to keep a large floor from looking boxed in, and it is why this piece sits so quietly under furniture.

The Light Green Field and Its Blues

The ground is a soft pistachio green, closer to celadon than to olive, with the faint wool luster that makes it shift toward pale gold where the light crosses the pile. Against it the drawing is carried almost entirely in two blues: a deep navy that outlines every leaf, stem and palmette, and a lighter cornflower blue that fills the long vine stems and the inner contours of the volutes. The flower heads are where the warmth comes in, worked in ivory, chalk white, soft salmon rose, apricot, camel and a dull gold, with occasional charcoal centers that anchor the larger blossoms. It is a cool, quiet palette overall, and buyers looking at green Persian rugs will find very few in this scale that read this light.

Kashan Weaving and the Quality of the Knot

Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan and has been a weaving center since the Safavid court workshops, known for soft lustrous local wool and for precise, disciplined drawing. It is also the most familiar Persian city weave in America without most people realizing it: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. The folded corner photograph shows what you are paying for here, a tight cotton foundation with small, even, well packed knots and crisp definition on the reverse, which is what lets a curved arabesque this long stay smooth instead of stepping. Fine wool on a cotton foundation at this density is the construction that carries a 9'8" x 13'5" floor through decades of real use, and the pile on this one is still full across the whole field.
