9'8" x 13' Persian Kashan Rug | Red Field, Dark Indigo Border, Lobed Floral Medallion | Semi-Antique

This is the classic central Persian formula worked at room scale: a deep red field carrying an unbroken floral lattice, a dark indigo lobed medallion at the center, and indigo spandrels pulling the four corners in. The pile is 3/8" wool on a cotton foundation, still thick and even across all 13 feet of length, with the original ivory fringe intact at both ends and clean selvages down the sides. At 9'8" x 13" the rug sits in the sweet spot for a large living room or a formal dining table with chairs pulled back, and it reads as one continuous design rather than a field broken by furniture. We import directly, inspect each piece by hand, and every rug ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The first photograph was shot under bright studio lighting that pushes the red field toward pink and magenta. The showroom floor photographs and the close-up details are the accurate reference for color: a true deep red with dark indigo borders. If you are matching to existing furnishings, judge the rug from images 2 through 5.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a dark indigo lobed medallion with a pale blue 8 petal rosette at its heart, framed by salmon and gold palmette lobes and finished top and bottom with a small pendant. Around it the field is covered edge to edge in curling vine, serrated leaves, split palmettes and small rosettes, drawn in the fluid curved line that separates workshop Kashan drawing from village geometry. Indigo spandrels close the 4 corners with their own vine work, and a thin ivory outline keeps them legible against the red. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a wide indigo main border of palmettes and rosettes on a scrolling stem, flanked by sky blue minor borders carrying alternating vases and leaf sprays, with narrow reciprocal guard stripes between them. Nothing in the layout is rushed, and the corners resolve cleanly where the border turns.

A Deep Red Field Against Dark Indigo

The ground is a saturated madder-toned red that warms under lamplight and cools toward a wine tone in daylight, exactly what you want from a red Persian rug of this size. Against it the main border and medallion are a very dark indigo, nearly black in the photographs until the light catches the vine work inside them. The relief colors do the rest of the work: sky blue in the guard borders and at the medallion center, clean ivory in the outlines, fringe and small blossoms, and a run of salmon, apricot and soft gold through the palmettes and corner pieces. Olive and sage greens appear in the leaves, with touches of chocolate brown in the stems. It is a strong, formal palette rather than a muted one, and it anchors a room with cream walls, dark wood or navy upholstery without needing anything else to carry the color.

Kashan Weaving and Quality

Kashan sits in central Persia north of Isfahan, and its looms inherited the Safavid court workshop tradition: careful cartoon-based drawing, soft lustrous local wool, and the recognizable formula of a red field with a navy lobed medallion. That formula is so familiar to American eyes that most people have seen it without naming it, and when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor. This piece follows the tradition faithfully, with a firm hand, a straight weave across a full 116" of width, and a pile short enough to show the drawing clearly while leaving plenty of wool for decades of use. If you want the background before you buy, read our Persian Kashan rugs guide, then compare it against the other 10x13 Persian rugs we currently hold in stock.
