Design and Motifs

There is no medallion. Instead the weaver worked an all over floral design built on a lattice of thin vines that branch, turn back on themselves and knit the whole field into one repeating movement. Sitting on that lattice are large flat rosettes, fan shaped palmettes, split arabesque leaves and small budded blossoms, with serrated acanthus leaves filling the gaps so no part of the ivory ground reads as empty. The repeat is mirrored across the length, which is what gives the field its calm symmetry even though no two adjacent flowers are quite the same. The main border answers the field rather than competing with it: a slow procession of big palmettes and rosettes on a curling vine, set on dark ground, with a narrow gold guard stripe on each side and a fine ivory outer stripe that stops the border dead against the selvage. The drawing throughout is curvilinear, not angular, with rounded petals and continuous vine lines that only hold together at a tight knot count.

A Study in Beige, Ivory and Deep Chocolate Brown

The field is a warm beige ivory, closer to unbleached linen than to white, and it shifts a full shade lighter or darker as you cross the room because of the natural luster of the wool. Across it the flowers are worked in old gold, honey, camel and a soft olive green, with brick rust and a muted burgundy used sparingly in the centers of the rosettes to give the field its accents. The main border is the counterweight: a deep chocolate brown with an olive cast that reads nearly black in the corners of the rug and opens up to a warm coffee tone under direct light, so the gold and ivory border flowers seem to float. That level of control is what allows curved vine work and rounded petals of this kind, which a coarser village weave simply cannot hold. The wool has the springy, slightly oily handle of good Persian highland fleece, and it is the reason the pile has stayed upright and the colors have stayed clean. Laid flat, it lies dead square with no ripple or bowed side.
