9' x 11'7" Afghan Oriental Rug | Faded Sage Green Transitional All-Over Floral | Natural Wool, New
This is a quiet rug, and that is the whole point of it. Woven by hand in Afghanistan on a cotton foundation with a hand-spun natural wool pile, the 9' x 11'7" piece carries a soft sage green field under an all-over floral drawing that has been washed down to a faded, almost sun-bleached tone. Nothing shouts. The flowers surface and recede depending on where you stand, which is why this style of Oriental rug has become the default choice for rooms with a lot of pattern already in the furniture. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion. Instead the weaver filled the field with an all-over floral lattice built from large palmettes, curling serrated leaves and small 8 petal rosettes that repeat on a loose diagonal. A handful of those rosettes are outlined in a rust rose that reads almost coral against the green, and they act as the only real punctuation in the field. An inner guard line frames the whole composition, and the main border runs a continuous vine of angular palmettes and leaf forms with squared rosette corner pieces, all drawn in the same muted register as the field. The outer guard stripes are narrow and keep the perimeter tidy. It is a transitional drawing in the Oushak and Ziegler tradition: traditional bones, contemporary restraint, no busy secondary detail competing for attention.
The Faded Sage and Camel Palette
The field is a pale sage green with a grey-green cast, and because the wool is hand-spun it takes dye unevenly, which gives the ground a subtle horizontal striation rather than a flat block of color. Over that green the floral work is drawn in golden camel and warm honey tan, with ivory highlights where the leaves catch the light. The border shifts warmer, moving into soft wheat and light brown so the perimeter reads a shade deeper than the center. Scattered rosettes in muted rose and a faint lavender-grey supply the only cool accents. Seen from one end the whole rug looks beige and gold; seen from the other the green comes forward. That directional shift is normal in hand-knotted wool and is one of the reasons these faded pastel pieces sit so easily with oak, linen, stone and off-white walls.
Woven in Afghanistan on Village Looms
Afghan weavers have built a reputation over the last few decades for exactly this kind of production: hand-spun local wool, a cotton warp and weft, natural dye recipes, and a careful post-weave wash that mellows the color without stripping the fiber. The back shown in the photographs is even and legible, with the knot rows clean and the design reading clearly from the reverse, which is the honest test of a hand-knotted rug. The pile is clipped low, so the drawing stays crisp and the rug lies flat right out of the roll. At 9' x 11'7" it covers a standard seating group with all legs on, and it sits squarely in the most useful of all large formats, the 9x12 Oriental rug class.
