9' x 11'9" Chobi Peshawar Rug | Ziegler All Over Lattice | Brown, Sky Blue & Ivory | New

This is a new, never used Chobi Peshawar in the Ziegler manner, hand-knotted entirely by hand in 100% wool on a cotton foundation and finished with a low 5/16" pile that keeps the drawing crisp underfoot. At 9' x 11'9" it covers a standard large living room or a dining table with all chairs pulled back, and the muted brown, sky blue and ivory palette makes it one of the easier Oriental rug types to place in a room that already has a lot going on. The wool is hand spun and the colors come from natural dye work, which is why the field reads soft rather than saturated in the photographs. Every rug we ship carries a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The field carries a repeating panel lattice, 4 motifs across by 6 down, built from cusped diamond cartouches that alternate between chocolate brown and pale blue grounds. Inside each cartouche sits a broad, deeply serrated palmette with 4 arms, drawn in ivory on the brown panels and in brown or soft gold on the light ones, so the eye reads a checkerboard before it reads the individual flowers. Between the diamonds the weaver has set quatrefoil rosettes with small cross-form centers, curling leaf sprays and, if you look closely at the detail photo, tiny stylized animals tucked into the interstices, a quiet touch that repeats across the lattice. The main border is a generous ivory band of large 8 petal rosettes linked by leaf palmettes and lotus buds, framed by narrow gold and blue guard stripes and closed by a solid brown outer edge that pulls the whole composition together. This is a true all over rug with no central medallion, so furniture can sit anywhere on it without breaking the pattern.

The Brown, Sky Blue and Ivory Palette

Three colors carry this rug. The dominant tone is a deep cocoa brown with a slight abrash, warmer in some panels and closer to bitter chocolate in others, which is exactly what hand spun wool and natural dyes give you. Against it runs a powdery sky blue, light and chalky rather than navy, used for the alternating panels and for the connecting ribbon that snakes through the lattice. Ivory and soft cream fill the ground between the two, brightening the field and carrying the entire main border. Accent notes are few and deliberate: a dry antique gold in the leaf palmettes and inner guard stripe, faded rose and old brick in the border rosettes, and small slate blue devices scattered through the border band. The overall effect is low contrast and restful, a rug that works with beige walls, warm woods, brass and both cool and warm upholstery without fighting anything in the room.

Woven in Peshawar, Pakistan

Chobi rugs are woven around Peshawar in northern Pakistan, where the workshops specialize in hand spun, vegetable dyed wool and in reviving the large scale Ziegler and Sultanabad drawing that decorators have wanted for a century. Chobi translates roughly as wood color, a reference to the soft, sun washed tones the dye masters build from plant sources, and the best of this work is finished with a light wash that settles the colors without stripping the wool of its natural oils. The knotting here is even and tight enough to hold the serrated palmette outlines cleanly across nearly 12 feet of length, the selvedges are hand wrapped, and the 5/16" clip keeps the pattern legible while still giving the pile enough body to wear well in a busy room.
