9' x 12'6" Persian Tabriz Rug | Dull Red Field, Teal Floral Medallion | Khoy Weave, Excellent Condition

This 9' x 12'6" rug is a classic northwest Persian room piece: a dull red open field, a wide ivory border, and a teal and ivory medallion drawn with the curved, disciplined line that the workshops of Tabriz and its surrounding weaving towns are known for. It is hand-knotted with a 3/8" wool pile on a cotton foundation, and the pile reads even from end to end with clean, straight selvages and full original fringe. The scale suits a true dining table or a full seating group, which puts it squarely among 9x12 Persian rugs in usable footprint while running an extra 6 inches in length. Design and Motifs

The composition is built outward from a round central medallion packed with concentric rings of small palmettes, teardrop cartouches and 8 petal rosettes, with a fine ivory tracery of vine scroll holding the whole disc together. Above and below the medallion sit slender pendant finials tipped with a dark blue floret, and the field between them is left almost entirely open so the eye rests. The 4 corners carry generous ivory spandrels filled with curling leaves, rounded palmettes and blossoming stems that spill a few detached rosettes out onto the red ground. Three borders frame the piece: a broad ivory main band of alternating fan palmettes and heart shaped blossoms, a teal guard stripe of linked rosettes on either side, and a narrow brown vine running as the outermost line. It is a formal, balanced drawing, the kind a buyer chooses when the room needs a center rather than more pattern.

The Dull Red, Teal and Ivory Palette

The field is a soft dull red, closer to a muted brick or old rose than a bright crimson, and it shifts gently with the nap so the open ground never looks flat. Against it the ivory spandrels and ivory main border read as warm cream rather than white, with a faint sandy tone in the ground of the border. The medallion center is the coolest note in the rug, a mid teal blue that carries through into the guard stripes and into the small rosette clusters scattered across the border. Deep navy and near black outline the palmettes and give the drawing its definition, while dark green leaves, dusty rose blossoms and small touches of soft gold and pale salmon warm the ivory areas. It is a quiet color story overall: red and cream carrying the room, teal supplying the contrast, and the darker blues keeping the pattern crisp at a distance.

Khoy lies northwest of Tabriz in the Azerbaijan corner of Persia, and its weavers work in the Tabriz manner: cotton warp and weft, a firm double weft that keeps the rug flat on the floor, and cartoon drawn designs measured on the Raj system that the Tabriz masters established.
