9' x 12'7" Oriental Rug | Kashan Design Ivory Field | Fine Wool Estate Piece

This is a large, densely knotted estate piece from the 2000s, woven entirely by hand in Pakistan in the classical Kashan drawing that city workshops have copied and refined for generations. At 9' x 12'7" it covers a full formal room, and the weight tells you immediately what it is: a tight, heavy wool pile on a cotton foundation, cropped low enough that the smallest flower heads stay crisp. The ivory field carries an uninterrupted floral lattice framed by a deep raspberry red main border, and the wool has the quiet sheen that only comes from good fleece and a firm beat-down. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is hand-knotted, along with its measurements, materials and origin.

Please Note About the Photographs:

This is a pre-owned estate rug in excellent overall condition, and we photograph it honestly. A few faint pale spots are visible in the ivory field in the close-up images. They are minor surface discoloration only, with no wear, no thinning and no repairs, and the pile stands full across the entire rug. Every rug is professionally cleaned, steamed and pressed before it ships.

Design and Motifs

The field is a true all-over floral design rather than a medallion layout, built on a system of curving vines that turn back on themselves and never quite repeat where you expect. Split palmettes, serrated acanthus leaves, 8 petal rosettes and long feathered boteh sweep across the ivory ground in mirrored pairs, with small cypress and vase forms anchoring the center line. One tiny lobed rosette sits at the exact middle of the rug, no larger than a hand, a quiet nod to the medallion that the weaver chose not to draw. The framing is a classic 3 part arrangement: a wide raspberry main border of alternating palmettes and curled paisleys, flanked by narrow blue-grey guard stripes carrying a running chain of small flower heads, and a final ivory outer guard that brings the eye back to the field color. The corners resolve cleanly on all 4 sides, which on a floral all-over of this scale takes real planning on the cartoon.

The Ivory and Red Color Palette

The ground is a warm ivory, closer to unbleached cream than white, and it shifts under raking light because the pile is cut evenly and lies in one direction. Against it the main border reads as a cool raspberry red with a faint blue undertone, deeper in the shadows and lighter where the wool catches the light. The drawing inside both field and border is where the color count really opens up: forest and sage green in the leaves, a soft powder blue and a deep navy outlining almost every motif, plus salmon, peach, dusty rose, pale gold and an occasional touch of aubergine in the flower centers. The navy outlines do the structural work, keeping each motif separate so the ivory field never turns busy. Viewed from the back, the same palette shows in a lighter, chalkier register, which is a good sign of natural, evenly spun dye lots rather than heavy surface treatment.

Origin and Weaving Quality

Pakistan's workshop weavers have built their reputation on reproducing classical city patterns with discipline, and this piece is a strong example of what that tradition produces at the upper end. The knotting is dense and regular, the rows are straight from selvage to selvage, and the back shows small, even knot nodes with no slack or pulled areas across nearly 13 feet of length. It is a true hand-knotted Oriental rug, wool pile on a cotton warp and weft, with hand-finished selvages and original knotted fringe at both ends. Buyers comparing it against other hand-knotted Oriental rugs in this size will notice the weight first: this one lies flat immediately and holds its shape under furniture, which is exactly what you want from a room-size floral in daily use.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
