This 9' x 12' piece is a flat woven Aubusson in the French Country manner: a deep black ground carried corner to corner by scrolling acanthus leaves in camel, cinnamon, blush and ivory, with small berry roses tucked into the curls. There is no medallion and no open field. The drawing is mirrored on both axes, so the whole surface reads as one continuous composition rather than a stamped repeat. Because it is woven flat with no pile height, the wool has a faint tapestry sheen, the rug lies perfectly level under furniture legs, and doors clear it without trimming. Design and Motifs

The field is a classic European acanthus scroll, an all-over design built from broad curling leaves that unroll into tight spirals, each spiral closed by a small 8 petal rosette. Two large crowned crests sit on the long axis, one toward each end, with feathered plumes fanning out from a central bud. Between the scrolls the weaver has dropped cabbage roses and rosebuds in raspberry and old pink, plus tiny leaf sprays in olive grey that keep the black from going flat. The field is framed by a fine scalloped ivory guard, then a narrow black stripe with a repeating camel ribbon, then the main border: a continuous garland of feathered leaves and open roses on black. The corners resolve cleanly, with the garland turning rather than being cut, which is the mark of a properly cartooned Aubusson.

Black Ground With Camel, Blush and Berry

The ground is a true matte black, dense and even, and it does the heavy lifting: everything laid over it gains a step of contrast. The scrollwork is shaded rather than flat, moving from a warm caramel brown at the base of each leaf through tan and camel to a pale blush and finally to ivory at the tips, so the leaves look lit from one side. Golden ochre accents appear on the smaller buds and inner curls. The flowers are the only cool note, a berry raspberry and a softer antique rose, with grey green leaflets.
