12' x 15' Aubusson Flat Weave Rug | French Medallion on Black Acanthus Field | Excellent Condition

Laid out at 12' x 15', this is a French Aubusson drawing room floor rendered in one continuous piece of handwoven wool. There is no pile to hide behind: the whole design is built in flat tapestry weave, so every curl of the acanthus and every petal of the roses is drawn in yarn rather than sculpted in clipped wool. The result sits low and smooth underfoot, slides cleanly under heavy dining chairs and case furniture, and reads as a painted floor from the doorway. Pieces at this scale belong to the oversize 12x15 rug class, which is exactly where the Aubusson format was designed to live. The rug is in excellent, never used condition, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine handwoven piece.

Design and Motifs

The centre holds a large lobed medallion shaped like a rounded quatrefoil, its outline stepped with small scrolled shoulders and ringed by a fine beaded band. Inside sits a laurel wreath enclosing a bouquet of open roses and buds, with 4 satellite roundels set at the diagonals, each carrying its own small spray. Ribbons, flutes and slender leaf scrolls fill the remaining ivory ground, and a crested cartouche anchors the medallion at the top and bottom on the long axis. Around it the black field explodes into broad acanthus leaves that curl back on themselves in long C shapes, each spandrel mirroring its opposite so the 4 corners balance exactly. Full blown roses, poppies and small five petal blossoms are tucked into the scrollwork. The main border is a running chain of oval cabochons separated by pointed leaf tips, closed at the corners by a shell rosette in a squared panel, and finished with a plain black outer band that frames the whole composition like a picture mount.

The Beige, Black and Gold Palette

The dominant reading is beige. The medallion is a warm oatmeal ivory that shades toward cream at the centre and picks up a faint honey tone where the wool catches light, and the same beige carries through the border ground and the narrow guard stripes. Against it the field is a deep matte black, almost inky, which is what gives the rug its drama and makes the pale medallion appear to float. The acanthus work is drawn in layered golds, from a soft wheat through antique brass to a darker amber on the shaded side of each leaf, with pale celadon and grey green used on the reverse faces so the foliage turns in space. Accents of salmon, terracotta and muted coral appear in the rose heads and in the small buds scattered through the scrolls, and there are quiet flickers of pale blue in the leaf sprays. The cabochon border adds olive green fields behind the oval gold medallions. It is a restrained, aged palette rather than a bright one, and it settles easily against dark wood, parquet, marble and painted panelling.

Aubusson Weaving and the Chinese Ateliers

Aubusson is a town in central France whose workshops spent the 17th and 18th centuries weaving flat tapestry floor coverings for chateaux and civic rooms, working from painted cartoons in the same way a tapestry panel is woven. This rug was handwoven in China, where the great flat weave ateliers took up the Aubusson cartoon tradition and now produce the most accomplished work of its kind anywhere. It is a demanding technique: a flat weave has nowhere to bury a mistake, so the curve of a scroll and the gradation from wheat to amber inside a single leaf have to be plotted colour by colour, weft by weft. Look at the corner detail and you can see how cleanly the oval cabochons keep their spacing and how sharply the black outer band meets the beige border. Classed as an Oriental rug by origin and French by design, it is a genuinely handmade piece at a scale most weavers never attempt.
