Because there is no pile, the rug sits almost flush with the floor, slides under heavy furniture and doors without packing, and reads more like a tapestry laid down than a conventional thick carpet-weight piece. The drawing is French neoclassical: a crowned sunburst medallion at center, an ivory panel of shields, wreaths and trophies around it, and a sage green outer field carrying large acanthus scrolls toward each corner. The back tag is marked 5509, size 12 x 18.2, and the rug ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-woven piece.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a round sunburst medallion: a lilac disc with a 4 petal rosette at its heart, ringed by carved ivory leaves and then by a corona of rust and apricot flame rays. Around it, a broad ivory cartouche panel with shaped, indented corners carries the full neoclassical vocabulary, including crowned shields, laurel wreaths, quivers, torches, lyres and drums drawn in soft rust outline, with small cloud forms drifting between them. Beyond that panel the sage field opens into the wide plain ground, and each end anchors a large urn from which enormous acanthus leaves and vine scrolls unfurl across the corners, punctuated by small coral blossoms and a single crown at the head of the rug. The borders are restrained on purpose: a narrow peach stripe, then an ivory band of interlocking guilloche ovals with a rosette set at each of the 4 corners, then a plain olive gold outer band that frames the whole composition like a picture mat.

A Study in Sage Green, Beige and Gold

The palette is deliberately quiet and works almost entirely in the neutral range. The field is a soft sage green, grayed rather than grassy, that shifts toward pale celadon where the light catches it and toward olive in the shaded photographs. Against that ground the central panel is cream and warm ivory, giving the medallion area a distinctly lighter weight than the field and making the room read taller. The accents are all warm: apricot, peach and a muted brick rust in the flame rays, the blossoms and the outlines of the trophies, with buff and taupe used for shading on the acanthus leaves so the scrollwork has depth without any hard contrast. A single note of pale lilac blue at the medallion center is the only cool color in the rug. The outer band is a deeper olive gold, and the peach guard stripes carry that warmth out to the edge. Aubusson is a town in central France whose workshops perfected the flat tapestry carpet for chateau and salon floors from the 17th century onward, and the design language on this rug, the sunburst medallion, the trophy panel, the acanthus scroll, comes straight out of that tradition. This piece was hand-woven in China, which is where the majority of the world's good Aubusson-style tapestry work is produced today, on vertical looms by weavers who build the curved drawing line by line without any pile to hide behind.
