9' x 12' Modern Gabbeh Rug | Bold Color Block Bands | Brand New Wool Pile
Four wide bands of color, nothing else: that is the whole idea behind this 9' x 12' hand-knotted wool Gabbeh, and at room size it reads less like a traditional floor covering and more like a painted canvas laid down flat. Forest green holds one end, then saffron yellow, brick red and a warm rust orange run across to the other, each panel separated by a single narrow row of small woven animals and plants. The pile is thick, hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, cut heavy enough that the surface feels cushioned underfoot and the colors shift slightly as the light moves. It is brand new and never used, a piece of modern and contemporary hand-knotted weaving rather than an antique, and it ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, knot by knot, in wool.
Design and Motifs
The drawing is deliberately simple. There is no medallion, no spandrel and no outer border: the field is divided into 4 open horizontal panels that run the full 9' width, with the thin motif rows doing all of the detail work. Look closely at those rows and the vocabulary is purely tribal: pairs of goats and ibex walking nose to tail, a small mounted rider, long legged birds, stacked cypress and tree of life sprigs, and tiny blossom clusters in blue and green. Most are no more than a few knots tall, yet they give the eye something to find after the big color statement has registered. The weaver also left the panels alive with abrash, the natural tonal striation of hand-spun yarn, so the green shades from olive to deep bottle and the red moves from cherry into burgundy across the same band. It is a minimalist layout executed with village hands, which is exactly why it does not feel flat.
A Color Block Palette of Green, Saffron, Red and Rust
Color is the entire argument here, and it is a confident one. The green panel is a true grass to forest green, flecked with lighter yellow green fibers where the hand-spun wool takes the dye unevenly. Beside it sits a wide marigold saffron yellow, the brightest band in the rug and the one that carries the most sheen. The third panel is a brick red that deepens toward burgundy in the close-up photographs, and the fourth is a softer rust terracotta orange that looks almost cinnamon in raking light. Small hits of sky blue, grass green, gold and crimson appear only in the motif rows, where they outline the animals and sprigs against the solid grounds. Together it is a genuinely multi-colored rug built on warm earth tones, which means it anchors a neutral room instantly and pairs more easily with wood, leather and linen than the photographs first suggest.
Gabbeh Weaving and Where This Rug Was Made
Gabbeh means a coarse, thick, loosely knotted weave, a style that grew out of nomadic tribal looms where weavers worked from memory instead of a drawn cartoon, using chunky hand-spun yarn and a tall pile for warmth. This piece was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the quality shows in the evenness of the panels, the straight selvedges and the tidy cotton foundation visible on the folded corner. The knot count is modest by design, as it should be in a Gabbeh, because the character comes from the wool and the color rather than from fine drawing. If you are comparing it against classical city weaving, our guide on the difference between a Persian and an Oriental rug explains what separates the two traditions, and you can see how this one sits beside other 9x12 Oriental rugs in the same format.
