9' x 12' Persian Kashan Rug | Ivory All-Over Floral Field | Sage Green Border | Excellent Condition
This is a classic room-size Kashan woven in the 2000's, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, and it reads very differently from the red-field pieces most people picture when they think of Persian Kashan rugs. The field is an open ivory, the drawing is a continuous floral repeat rather than a single central medallion, and the border is a soft sage green instead of the usual deep navy. At 9' x 12' it covers a full seating group or a 8 seat dining table with chairs pulled back, which is why 9x12 remains the most requested of all 9x12 Persian rugs. The pile is full and even across the whole surface, the selvages are intact and the fringes are original and uncut. Every rug we sell ships with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials, age and size.
Please Note About the Photographs:
A few of the close-up photos show a faint horizontal line across the field where the rug was folded in pallet storage. That is a fold mark, not wear, not fading and not damage. It relaxes once the rug is laid flat, and every rug leaving our warehouse is professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.
Design and Motifs
The field carries a true all-over floral design built on a lattice of thin brown vines that curve and double back without ever repeating in an obvious block. Large round rosettes anchor the center line, each one drawn with a scalloped outline and a small inner flower head, and they alternate with broad palmettes, serrated acanthus leaves and curling split-leaf tendrils. Smaller 8 petal flowers and buds fill the spaces between, so there is almost no empty ground, yet the ivory still breathes because the weaver kept the outlines fine. The main border runs a continuous vine of turtle palmettes and rosettes, flanked by 2 pairs of narrow guard stripes with a running floral meander, and the 4 corners resolve cleanly, which is the mark of a drawn cartoon rather than an improvised village copy.
A Study in Ivory, Sage Green and Blue
The ground is a warm ivory with a faint cream cast that picks up light along the pile direction, the quality that makes ivory Persian rugs so easy to live with in a room that already has pattern. Against it the weaver worked an unusually cool palette: powder and steel blue flower heads, deep navy outlining and shadow work, and sage to olive green in the leaves and through the entire main border. Warmth comes from measured touches of rust, copper and tobacco brown in the central rosettes and in the vine stems, with small ivory flower heads scattered through the border for lift. There is no hot red anywhere in this rug. The result is a quiet, almost faded antique look straight out of the loom, which is why it sits comfortably with grey upholstery, walnut furniture and painted woodwork alike.
Kashan: Central Persia's Court Weaving City
Kashan sits in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that set the standard for curvilinear Persian design. The city is known for soft, lustrous local wool and for disciplined workshop weaving, the classic formula being a red field with a navy lobed medallion and ivory spandrels; this piece takes the same hand and applies it to an open ivory ground, which takes more skill because every outline is exposed. The knotting here is even and tight enough to hold the fine stems and the small flower heads crisply, and the back shows a regular, well-packed grid with no pulling at the ends. Kashan is also the design you have already seen without knowing it: when you watch Shark Tank there is a Persian Kashan on the floor.
