10'2" x 10'2" Square Savonnerie Rug | Hand-Knotted Wool | Burgundy Field with Gold Acanthus Scrolls

A true square is one of the hardest formats to find in a hand-knotted piece, and at 10'2" x 10'2" this one is built for a room that needs a centered, symmetrical floor. It is a Savonnerie, the French court style of grand round medallions and carved acanthus foliage, woven knot by knot in wool on a cotton foundation rather than printed or tufted. The pile is thick and evenly clipped, the drawing is bold enough to read from across a large room, and the hand-tied ivory fringe finishes both ends cleanly. Condition is excellent and never used. Design and Motifs

The composition is pure Savonnerie logic: a large diamond panel set inside the square field, with a round central medallion built from three concentric rings of small blossoms and scrolling leaf work around an 8 petal rosette core. Inside the diamond, small circular reserves carry crown motifs, a direct nod to the royal manufactory drawings the style descends from. Beyond the diamond, 4 corners each fill with enormous carved acanthus leaves that curl around rosette wheels, the kind of sculptural foliage normally seen on carved plaster or gilt furniture. The inner frame of the diamond is a fine laurel leaf chain, repeated again as the narrow outer border, with small rosette medallions punctuating the corners and midpoints. There is no heavy multi-band border here; the restraint at the edges is deliberate and keeps all the weight in the center.

A Deep Burgundy Field Lit by Gold and Sage

The ground is a deep wine burgundy that photographs darker at the edges and warmer under lamplight, closer to oxblood than to a bright cherry red. Against it the foliage is worked in a graded palette of camel gold, honey and pale butter, with ivory used only at the leaf tips and blossom highlights so the scrollwork appears to catch light from one direction. Soft sage and olive green shade the undersides of the acanthus leaves and the laurel chains, which is what gives the carving its depth rather than flat outlining. Touches of brown and dark plum sit in the shadow lines where the leaves overlap. The overall effect is warm and formal: a saturated red room anchor with enough gold in it to sit comfortably with wood tones, brass and cream upholstery.

Woven in India in the Savonnerie Tradition

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this is a clear example of why. The weavers reproduce a 17th century French court design with a modern hand: a level, straight weave, squared corners across all 10 feet, and a pile clipped high enough to give the acanthus leaves real relief. The close-up of the edge shows the cotton warps and the tightly packed wool rows behind the fringe, a solid, heavy-bodied construction meant to take traffic.
