This is a full room size hand-knotted wool rug woven in Persia to a classic Tabriz drawing, with a red field, a black and ivory medallion at center and a deep black main border carrying figural corner panels. The pile is a firm 3/8" of wool on a cotton foundation, the ends are secure and the surface reads evenly across all 152 inches of length, which is what you want from a semi antique piece of this scale. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classic curvilinear medallion format: a large lobed black medallion at center, crowned top and bottom by pointed pendants, with an 8 petal ivory rosette set at its core and rings of palmettes, cloudbands and small rosettes radiating outward. The field around it is anything but empty. It is filled with a dense all over vine scroll carrying serrated leaves, boteh paisleys, split palmettes and small ivory and rose blossoms, so the eye keeps finding new drawing the closer it gets. The 4 corners of the field carry black spandrels, and inside the lower and upper corners of the border scheme sit figural panels with deer and birds worked into the foliage, an older workshop habit that turns a formal medallion rug into something with a story in it. The main border is a black ground band of alternating palmettes and large boteh, framed by a peach ivory vine guard on the inside and a blue floral guard outside, with the outermost red selvage line carrying the design cleanly to the ivory fringe.

A Red Field Read Against Black and Ivory

Red does the heavy work here, a deep madder red that leans toward raspberry in open light and toward wine under lamps, and it is the constant across the entire field. Against it the black of the medallion, the spandrels and the main border reads almost inky, which is exactly why the drawing stands out the way it does: ivory and soft peach outlines separate every motif from its black ground, so the detail never muddies. Inside those motifs the palette opens up into rose pink, dusty mauve, sky blue, denim blue, olive green and tan, small quantities used repeatedly rather than in blocks, which gives the surface its shimmer when you walk past it. The fringe and the inner guard bands supply clean ivory, and the peach vine band just inside the main border is the warmest note in the rug. In a room with cream walls and dark wood it will read rich and traditional; against grey walls the raspberry side of the red comes forward.

Persian Origin and the Tabriz Weaving Tradition

Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the reference point for workshop weaving there for centuries, which is why its medallion and vine drawing was copied and rewoven across the country. The style depends on a curved line, and a curved line only works when the weaver has enough knots to draw it, so the pattern itself is a statement about the quality of the loom that produced it. This piece shows that discipline: the medallion is symmetrical end to end, the border turns the 4 corners without the pattern breaking, and the vine scroll keeps its rhythm across more than 12 feet of field. The wool is well spun with the dry, springy hand that wears in rather than wears out, knotted on a cotton warp and weft and clipped to a medium 3/8" pile that holds detail while still taking foot traffic. A rug woven at this scale and finished this cleanly was made to be a lifetime floor, not a decoration.
