Most room size Persian rugs fill every inch of the field. This one does the opposite. Across 10'4" x 14' the weaver left the ivory ground almost entirely bare, placing a single slender floral medallion at the center and letting a scalloped wreath of flowering vines hold the edges. It is a confident piece of drawing, and it is the reason the rug reads as calm rather than busy under furniture. The wool pile is full and soft with no thin areas, the ends and sides are intact, and the cotton foundation is straight and true. Design and Motifs

The center medallion is drawn as a tall lozenge built from stacked palmettes, small 8 petal rosettes and thin arching leaf sprays, finished top and bottom with a pendant finial. It floats free of the field with no connecting lines, which is what gives the rug its openness. The four corners carry deep floral spandrels of roses, tulip buds and curling vinery that step inward in a scalloped arc, so the plain ground is shaped like a cartouche rather than a plain rectangle. The main border runs a continuous procession of flowering plants and serrated leaves, separated from the field and from the outer edge by narrow guard stripes of running vine. Look closely at the corner detail and you will see the resolution is worked out properly: the pattern turns the corner cleanly instead of being cut off, which is a sign the cartoon was drawn for this exact loom width.

Ivory Ground, Green Border and Rose Highlights

The field is a warm ivory with a faint buttery cast, not a bleached white, and because the pile is long and lustrous it shifts between cream and pale honey as you walk around it. Against that ground the palette is deliberately cool: the main border is a muted sage green with a grey undertone, and the guard stripes and outer band are a soft terracotta rose that has mellowed into a brick tone. The floral work is carried in inky navy blue for the stems, leaf veins and outlines, with salmon and dusty rose for the blossoms and touches of pale gold and celadon in the leaves. Navy does the structural work here, drawing every flower head and keeping the design crisp against the ivory. Rose provides the warmth. The result is a rug that sits happily with cream, oatmeal, walnut and dark green interiors without forcing a red room around it.

Woven in Persia in the Kerman Drawing Tradition

The drawing follows the school of Persian Kerman rugs from the southeast of the country, where weavers built their reputation on naturalistic roses, garden borders and pale open grounds rather than on tight geometry. What makes this example worth handling is the execution: the curve of every vine is smooth, the medallion is symmetrical from end to end across 14 feet, and the knotting on the reverse is even and fine enough to hold detail as small as a single rose bud. The foundation is cotton, the pile is good long staple wool that has taken the dyes cleanly, and the weave is dense enough that the rug lies flat and heavy on the floor. A hand-knotted piece of this size represents well over a year at the loom for a small team, and at 10'4" x 14' it is scaled for a full seating group with all four legs on the rug.
