10' x 13'8" Zigler Oriental Rug | Warm Brown, Beige & Gold All-Over Floral | Hand-Knotted Natural Wool, Brand New
This 10' x 13'8" Zigler is a large, deliberately quiet room rug: one continuous field of loose palmettes and vine work, drawn softly enough that the eye reads surface and texture before it reads pattern. It is hand-knotted in natural wool with a low, even clip, and the finish gives it the settled, lightly washed look of an old room piece even though it has never been on a floor. At this scale it anchors a great room or a full dining setting wall to wall, and it falls squarely in the 10x14 rugs class that most open-plan living rooms need. Every rug ships with a certificate of authenticity recording the hand-knotted construction, the wool pile and the origin.
Design and Motifs
There is no central medallion here. The drawing is an all-over floral design in the Sultanabad manner: broad palmettes, open lotus heads, curling serrated leaves and a slow vine that repeats across the whole field rather than building to a focal point. Small lobed rosettes outlined in faded salmon punctuate the repeat, one of which sits clearly in the close detail photographs, and they are the only notes of real color contrast in the piece. The main border runs a chain of angular cartouches and paired leaf forms between two narrow guard stripes, and the 4 corners resolve cleanly without the pattern collapsing. Because the motifs are scaled large and spaced generously, the design stays legible under furniture, which is exactly what a rug of this footprint has to do.
A Warm Neutral Palette of Brown, Beige and Gold
The field is a warm mid brown that shifts toward honey and soft gold as the light moves across the pile, with visible abrash giving the ground a hand-dyed depth instead of a flat printed tone. Motifs are worked in pale ivory and light sand, so the pattern reads as a tonal shadow rather than a contrast, and the border lifts a shade lighter than the field to frame it. Traces of muted salmon and faint soft green appear in the rosettes and leaf tips, just enough to keep the neutral scheme from going dead. This is the palette people ask for when they want an authentic hand-knotted piece that behaves like a beige and ivory rug in the room, living easily with oak floors, linen upholstery, brass and plaster walls.
Zigler Weaving and the Quality of This Piece
The Zigler name goes back to a 19th century trading house that commissioned village weavers to draw classical designs in softer, more open palettes for Western rooms. Today the best work in that tradition is woven in Pakistan, where workshops keep the hand-spun wool, the large scaled drawing and the restrained dye recipes that made the style collectible in the first place. This example shows that discipline: a firm, regular knot across the back, straight selvedges, hand-tied fringe at both ends and a pile dense enough to take heavy traffic without shedding its drawing. If you are weighing it against Persian weaving, the honest distinction is set out in our guide to what separates a Persian rug from an Oriental rug, and a piece at this size and condition holds its own in either company.
