Teal is the hardest color to find in a hand-knotted rug this size, which is the first reason to stop on this one. The field is a soft, slightly grey teal-blue that shifts toward sage where the light hits it, and the whole 10' x 14'3" surface is covered edge to edge with drawn floral work rather than a single medallion. It is a traditional Oriental rug, hand-knotted in India on a cotton foundation with a wool pile, and it sits squarely in the most usable of the large formats, so it is worth comparing against our other 10 x 14 rugs before you decide. Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion here. The weaver used a repeating all-over floral lattice built from thin vines that climb the length of the rug and split into lanceolate leaves, tulip buds, and large split palmettes crowned with serrated foliage. The close-up shows how carefully it is drawn: each palmette is outlined in dark brown and shaded through 4 or 5 tones so it reads as a three dimensional flower rather than a flat silhouette, and small 8 petal rosettes and crosses fill the spaces between the stems. The main border is an ivory ground carrying a scrolling vine with brown and olive palmette cartouches, set between olive-gold guard bands of alternating boteh and cruciform devices. Corners are resolved properly, with the vine turning rather than being cut, which is the detail that separates a workshop drawing from a quick commercial copy.

A Muted Teal-Blue Field with Ivory, Olive and Rust

The field color is the story. It is a low-saturation teal-blue, closer to sea glass or weathered slate than to a bright peacock, and it changes noticeably with the angle of the light: cooler and greyer in the overhead photo, warmer and greener in the angled floor shots. Against it the florals are worked in beige, sand, soft peach, honey gold, olive green and a deep oxblood rust that appears only in the hearts of the largest palmettes, with dark brown outlining to hold the drawing together. The ivory main border lifts the whole piece and gives the eye a place to rest, while the olive-gold guard stripes and the teal selvage tie the border back into the field. Practically speaking, this is a quiet palette that works with cream walls, walnut and oak floors, and blue-grey or camel upholstery, and it hides traffic far better than a light ivory field would.

Hand-Knotted in India: Origin and Weaving Quality

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and we say that without hedging. The weaving centers of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan inherited the classical floral vocabulary and now execute it with excellent wool, stable cotton warps and consistent dye lots, which is exactly what a rug of this size needs if it is going to lie flat and wear evenly for decades.
