10' x 14' Beige Aubusson Rug | Flat-Woven Floral Sprays | Chocolate Brown Border | Excellent

This is a large flat-woven room-size piece in the Aubusson manner, 10' x 14' of sand beige ground scattered with small hand-drawn flower sprays and framed by a wide chocolate brown border. There is no pile at all: the wool is woven in tapestry technique directly onto a cotton foundation, so the surface sits low and smooth, reads almost like a fine textile, and slides easily under doors and dining chairs. The back tag numbers it 78830 and confirms the 10 x 14 measurement. It is in excellent, never used condition, with tight selvages and full, even weave from end to end, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming that it is a genuine handmade piece.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The straight lines you can see across the field in several photos are fold and roll creases from pallet storage, plus the shadows they throw under the studio lights. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. A flatweave shows creases more plainly than a pile rug simply because there is no pile to hide them, and they relax out once the rug is laid flat. Every rug leaves us professionally steamed and pressed before shipping.

Design and Motifs

There is no medallion and no busy filler here. The whole field is given over to individual flower sprays, each one a small bouquet of 3 to 5 blooms with a curving stem and a few leaves, set out in staggered rows across the open ground. Count the vocabulary and you find ragged blue cornflowers with red centers, full ivory garden roses, dusty rose mallows, clusters of saffron poppies, and little lavender asters with pale buds, each drawn with shading in the petals rather than flat blocks of color. Because the drawing is done in tapestry weave, the outlines are crisp and slightly angular where the wefts turn, which gives the flowers the hand-painted look that Aubusson pieces are known for. The border is deliberately plain: a wide solid brown band separated from the field by a narrow ivory guard stripe, so nothing competes with the sprays. It is an all over floral layout that stays calm from any viewing angle, which matters at this footprint.

A Study in Soft Beige, Brown and Garden Color

The ground is a warm sand beige, closer to unbleached linen than to cream, and it shifts slightly with the light, reading paler and sandier in the overhead shots and warmer and more camel in the close details. Against it, the border is a deep chocolate brown with a caramel cast where the weave catches light, and the thin guard stripe between them is a pale buttery ivory that lifts the whole frame. The flowers supply every note of real color: sky and cobalt blue in the cornflowers, a rusty red dot at each of their centers, dusty rose and old pink in the mallows and tulip buds, clean ivory and cream in the roses, soft heliotrope lavender in the asters, and clear saffron orange in the poppy clusters. Stems and leaves run through sage, olive and a deep ink navy that does the outlining work. The overall effect is a neutral rug with color spoken at conversational volume, which is exactly why beige and ivory rugs of this type sit so easily with painted furniture, wood tones and upholstery you already own.

Chinese Weaving in the Aubusson Tradition

Aubusson is a French town whose workshops built their reputation on pileless tapestry floor coverings for chateaux and salons, and the style has been woven in China for decades by workshops that specialize in the flat tapestry technique. This piece is that work at a good level: the wefts are packed evenly, the color joins are clean, the selvages are firm, and the 10' x 14' panel has been kept square across a very wide loom, which is the hard part at this width. A flatweave of this kind is a different animal from a knotted Oriental rug: thin, light for its footprint, easy to lift and rotate, and happiest in formal rooms rather than high-traffic corridors. Buyers shopping 10 x 14 rugs for a dining room or a large seating group will find this one covers the floor generously while keeping the visual weight low.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
