11'8" x 18' Aubusson Flat Weave Rug | Crowned Medallion & Floral Swags | Palace Size

At 11'8" x 18' this is a true palace piece, and it is built the way the old French ateliers built them: a flat tapestry weave with no pile at all, so the drawing reads as sharply as a painted cartoon and the whole rug lies paper thin under furniture. The ground is an ivory damask worked tone on tone, the center carries a crowned gold cartouche around an oval reserve of roses, and a deep navy band finishes all 4 sides. Because the surface is flat, a room this size gains scale without gaining bulk, which is why designers reach for these when a pile rug would fight the millwork. It is one of the few genuinely useful oversize 12x18 rugs that still feels light in a formal room, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The faint diagonal lines and soft shadows across the ivory ground are fold marks from rolled warehouse storage. They are not wear, not fading and not damage. A flat woven rug shows storage creases more readily than a pile rug, and they relax once the rug is laid out. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our floor.

Design and Motifs

The layout is pure 18th century French salon drawing. A shaped gold cartouche fills the middle of the field, capped by a small woven crown and packed with feathered acanthus scrollwork, and inside it sits an oval reserve holding a bouquet of roses, tulips and small white blossoms. Around that center the ivory ground is not left empty: it is worked with a tone on tone damask of scrolled ogees that you only catch at an angle, exactly as the old tapestry cartoons handled negative space. Ribbon swags in pale slate blue loop across all 4 quarters, tied to hanging garlands of roses and leafy sprays that follow the diagonal toward each corner. The border runs in 3 stages, a gold ribbon twist inner guard, a wide blue ground panel laced with a gold trellis and open rosettes, and an outer band of gadrooned leaf tips. Each of the 4 corners breaks the border with a shell and scroll cartouche enclosing a figural cameo roundel on caramel brown, the kind of flourish that tells you the cartoon was drawn rather than copied square by square.

A Palette of Ivory, Antique Gold and Faded Rose

The field is a warm ivory that leans toward clotted cream rather than white, and nearly all the structural drawing sits one or two steps above it in honey gold, wheat and pale buff, so the medallion reads as light on light. Deeper caramel and cinnamon browns outline the scrollwork and fill the corner cartouches, giving the design its weight. The flowers bring the only saturated notes: dusty rose and salmon petals, a few true pinks at the heart of the bouquets, cream and pale blue buds, all sitting on sage, olive and soft moss foliage. Ribbons run in a chalky slate blue, and that blue steps up in tone through the trellis border before resolving into the solid navy outer band that frames the entire 18 foot length. The result is a rug that behaves as a neutral from across the room and only shows its color when you stand over it, which is precisely what a large formal space needs from a floor this size.

Woven in China in the French Aubusson Tradition

Aubusson is a town in central France whose looms supplied the chateaux and salons from the 17th century onward, working in flat tapestry weave rather than knotted pile. That tradition is kept alive today by the workshops of China, which produce the most convincing hand woven Aubusson work being made anywhere, and this piece is a good example of why: the wool is beaten in tightly enough to hold crisp outlines on curved shapes, the color transitions inside the acanthus leaves are graded by hand rather than blocked, and the seams where the weaver changed color lie flat with no gapping. The back, visible in the final photograph, shows the clean tapestry structure and the cotton fringe finish. Buyers cross shopping the category often want to understand where a piece like this sits, and the difference between Persian work and the wider world of the Oriental rug trade is worth reading before you commit. Among oversize hand woven rugs, a flat weave of this scale is the rare one that ships and handles easily.
