12'1" x 17'9" Azari Oriental Rug | Coral Red & Gold All-Over Geometric Floral | Never Used

This is a big, confident room rug: 12'1" x 17'9" of hand-knotted wool on a cotton foundation, woven in the Azari manner with a coral red field, a wide golden ivory border and clear green accents through the drawing. It has never been used, the pile is full and even edge to edge, and the ends and selvages are original and intact. Pieces this large are not easy to find in one clean panel, and it belongs with our oversize 12 x 18 rugs for buyers furnishing a great room, a long formal living room or an open plan space where a 10x14 simply stops short. Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over geometric design built on a central column of stepped ivory medallions, each one anchored by a small cross of blocks and paired rosettes and flanked by broad serrated palmettes that reach out toward the border. Angular vines carry hooked leaves, eight point stars and small crosses across the open red ground, drawn with straight lines and stepped corners rather than curves, which is the language of village and workshop weaving in the northwest tradition. The wide ivory main border is the showpiece: large coral palmettes alternate with leafy green sprays and crenellated sprigs, set among scattered diamonds and tiny cruciform fillers. A reciprocal checkerboard stripe separates field from border on both sides, and a camel colored outer guard of simple rosettes and tulips closes the composition. The drawing is deliberately spacious, so from standing height the rug reads as bold and calm rather than busy.

The Coral Red, Gold and Green Palette

The field is a warm coral red with a tomato cast, and it is not flat: the wool takes the dye with gentle horizontal variation, a soft abrash that shifts a shade lighter and darker as the light crosses the pile, which is exactly what you want from a rug this size. Against it the medallions and palmettes are ivory sliding into oatmeal and pale gold, warm rather than chalky. The border ground is a deeper golden cream, and the outer guard stripe goes to a true camel gold with dark brown outlining. The green is the surprise element and reads soft, somewhere between sage and muted teal, used sparingly in leaves, stems, the odd rosette center and the tulip heads of the outer guard. A few small accents of rose and dark charcoal brown outline the motifs and keep the whole scheme from going soft. The overall effect is warm red and gold with cool green punctuation, easy alongside walnut and oak floors, leather, and cream or olive upholstery.

Azari Weaving and Quality

Azari is a design name, and this piece was made in Turkey, where the tradition of large scale hand-knotted weaving on a cotton warp and weft is very much alive. The wool is the point here: it is thick, glossy and springy, spun with enough lanolin left in it that the pile reflects light and resists crushing under furniture legs, which matters on a floor this big. Knotting is even across the full 12'1" width, the medallion column tracks straight down the length, and the rug lies flat without the waviness that betrays uneven tension. This is a village-weight Oriental rug rather than a fine city workshop piece, and it is meant to be used: dense enough to take decades of traffic, forgiving enough for dogs and dining chairs, and generous enough at 17'9" long to seat two full furniture groupings on one floor covering. Woven in the 2000's and never laid, it comes to you with its full original pile.
