12'2" x 17'10" Oriental Rug | Navy Blue All-Over Floral Vine | 1980s Wool Pile, Perfect Condition
At 12'2" x 17'10" this is a genuine palace piece, one of the few sizes that can hold a formal room end to end without a seam of bare floor anywhere. It was hand-knotted in wool in Pakistan in the 1980s, and it comes to us in perfect condition, with full pile, straight sides and clean ivory fringe. This is the kind of Oriental rug that was woven for a specific house rather than for stock, and at this scale it belongs in the small group of oversize 12x18 rugs that turn up only a handful of times a year. Every piece we ship carries our certificate of authenticity confirming that it is hand-knotted, its materials and its origin.
Design and Motifs
There is no medallion here. The field carries an all-over floral design, a continuous gold vine system that climbs from the base of the rug and branches symmetrically across the whole surface, so the drawing reads the same from either long side. Hung on that vine are large lobed palmettes, open lotus rosettes, small 4 petal blossoms and long serrated sickle leaves, each one outlined in a second color so the shapes stay legible against the dark ground. The layout is a classical court formula worked at a comfortable village scale: the motifs are drawn large enough to be read from standing height rather than crowded, which is exactly what an 18 foot room needs. Five bands frame the field. The wide main border runs deep red with alternating star rosettes and leafy vine turns, flanked inside and out by saffron guard bands of curling leaves, a narrow celadon minor stripe, and finally a plain navy outer band that squares the whole thing off. The corners resolve cleanly, with the border pattern turning properly at all 4 corners instead of being cut short.
Color: Midnight Navy, Saffron Gold and Deep Red
The field is a very dark navy blue that goes almost black in the low light of the corner photographs and opens into true indigo where the light rakes across the pile. Against it, the vine work is saffron gold, warm and slightly brassy, with a distinct sheen in the wool that makes the branches look lit from inside. The blossoms carry deep tomato and brick red, soft sage and celadon green, and pale ivory-beige centers, so each flower head holds 3 or 4 tones rather than a single flat color. The main border reverses the balance: a deep red ground with gold, green and ivory drawing, and charcoal navy rosette centers that tie back to the field. Small ivory and pale beige highlights are scattered through both field and border and keep the dark ground from closing up. The overall reading is a jewel palette, navy and gold with red weight around the edge, which sits well against dark wood, warm stone and cream walls alike.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This rug was made in Pakistan, where the weaving workshops around Lahore and the Punjab built their reputation in the second half of the 20th century on exactly this kind of work: classical drawing, hand-spun quality wool and honest knot counts at sizes most looms cannot handle. A 12'2" x 17'10" loom has to be built for the job, dressed with cotton warps under even tension, and kept in balance for the year or more the weaving takes, which is why oversize pieces from this period are so much scarcer than room-size ones. The back shows a tight, regular knot, straight rows and no drawing-in along the sides, and the pile still stands full and glossy after 40 years, a sign of good highland wool and light use. Weight and bulk are part of owning a rug this size, and all of our oversized rugs ship free to all 50 states rather than carrying the freight surcharge most dealers add.
