8'1" x 10'1" Jaipur Oriental Rug | Eggplant Purple All Over Floral | Fine Wool, Perfect Condition

Dark, formal and unusually easy to live with, this 8'1" x 10'1" Jaipur rug is hand-knotted in India in fine wool on a cotton foundation, and the eggplant purple ground is what sets it apart from the thousands of red and ivory floral rugs in the same size bracket. The field carries a full all over floral composition with no central medallion, so the rug reads evenly under furniture and does not fight a coffee table or a dining set placed over the middle. It arrives in perfect condition, with a full, level pile and clean ivory fringe at both ends, and ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a genuine hand-knotted piece. If you have been weighing the difference between this kind of Indian workshop weaving and a village piece, our guide on what separates an Oriental rug from its close relatives is worth ten minutes.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is classic Jaipur workshop floral: a thin vine lattice runs vertically through the field, and off it hang large lobed palmettes, layered rosettes and curling lanceolate leaves, with small 4 petal blossoms and tiny cypress-like sprigs filling the ground between them. No two vertical runs are identical in color, which keeps a repeating layout from looking printed. The field is framed by 5 border bands: a wide main border of gold acanthus scrolls and sage green quatrefoil rosettes, flanked on both sides by narrow ivory guard stripes carrying a running chain of miniature blossoms, and an outer plain band that closes the composition. The close-up photographs show the detail that matters, sharp outlining in ivory around each flower head and clean curved stems that hold their line through the turns, including the corner resolution where the border pattern meets rather than simply stopping.

The Eggplant Purple, Gold and Sage Palette

The field is a deep eggplant purple, an aubergine that photographs close to black in the overhead shot and shows its true plum tone in the angled and close-up images, where the wool catches the light. Against it, the floral work is drawn in warm gold and honey camel, soft sage and celadon green, and a clean ivory that does most of the outlining. Accents of rust, brick red and walnut brown sit inside the flower centers, and a few flower heads carry a pale cream almost to white. The main border repeats the field color, so the rug keeps its dark weight all the way to the edge rather than being bounded by a light frame. Practically, that combination is forgiving: the purple ground hides everyday traffic, while the gold and sage pull warmth out of oak and walnut floors, as the photographs on light oak show.

Jaipur Weaving and Build Quality

Jaipur, in Rajasthan, is one of the centers that made India the place where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and this piece shows why: a tightly and evenly beaten weave, a dense wool pile clipped low enough to hold fine detail, and a cotton foundation that keeps a rug of this size lying flat. The reverse photograph, shot with a ruler across the back, shows the knot rows running straight and closely packed, with no gaps, slubs or crooked selvedge, and the ends finished with a hand-knotted fringe rather than a machine-sewn binding. Wool of this grade takes dye deeply, which is why the eggplant ground is saturated instead of streaky, and it gives the rug the kind of surface that improves with vacuuming and foot traffic rather than flattening.
