9' x 12' Beige Indian Oriental Rug | Traditional All-Over Floral Vine | Soft Wool Pile
This is a quiet, confident room rug: a true 9' x 12' hand-knotted piece with a golden beige field, a wide ivory border and an all-over floral vine drawn in the classical traditional manner. The wool pile has a low, even clip that lets the drawing read clearly from standing height, and the palette is soft enough that the rug settles into a room instead of fighting the furniture. It has never been used, the pile is full across the whole field, and the hand-tied cotton fringe at both ends is clean and intact. Among 9x12 Oriental rugs this is the size most people actually need for a sofa group or a table of 8, and every rug we ship arrives with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine hand-knotted piece.
Design and Motifs
The field carries no medallion. Instead a continuous arabesque vine loops the full length of the rug, swelling into large fan-shaped palmettes, lotus blossoms and serrated acanthus leaves that alternate in a staggered repeat across 4 columns. Between the large palmettes sit smaller 8 petal rosettes and tiny paired buds in ivory and rust, which keep the open ground from reading flat. The pattern is directional in the best sense: the vine mirrors itself top to bottom, so the rug looks balanced from either end of the room. A narrow brown-ground inner band of running vine separates the field from the main border, which repeats big spiky palmettes and leaf sprays on ivory, and the whole composition is closed by a chevron minor stripe and a plain outer guard. The close-up photograph shows how carefully the outlines are drawn, with every leaf and petal given its own contour line.
Colors: Golden Beige Field, Ivory Border, Muted Accents
The field is a warm golden beige with a faint greenish cast in daylight, closer to dry wheat than to yellow, and it shifts a shade lighter or deeper depending on which way the pile is brushed. Against it the main border is a cooler ivory, almost oyster white, which frames the field cleanly without a hard contrast line. The motifs themselves are worked in muted soft brown, cinnamon and rust, pale camel, sage green and a few restrained touches of slate blue at the hearts of the largest palmettes, with small ivory highlights picking out petal tips. There is no bright or saturated color anywhere in the rug, and no harsh black outline; the darkest tone present is the medium brown used for the vine and the inner band. Buyers working with cream walls, oak floors, walnut furniture or a neutral linen sofa will find this one of the easier palettes to live with, and it suits anyone shopping beige and ivory tones rather than a strong red or navy.
Origin and Weaving Quality: Hand-Knotted in India
This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's good contemporary traditional weaving is now done, and we say that with confidence after decades of buying there. Indian workshops inherited the classical floral vocabulary and today supply the fine traditional work that the trade sells as an Oriental rug, with handspun wool, cotton warps and the same knot-by-knot method used for centuries. The back photograph, shown against a 12 inch ruler, tells you what you need to know: tight, even rows, no gaps, a flat uniform handle and knot nodes visible in straight lines across the width, which is the signature of a disciplined loom rather than a rushed one. The wool is springy and takes light well, so the pile resists crushing under furniture, and the overall build is right for daily use in a main room. If you are comparing this against other hand-knotted Oriental rugs, judge it on the clarity of the drawing and the evenness of the back, and this one holds up on both counts.
