12'8" x 18'6" Persian Bakhtiari Rug | Garden Panel Design | Oversize Wool, Excellent Condition

Garden panel Bakhtiaris are common enough in room sizes and genuinely scarce at this scale. This 12'8" x 18'6" piece covers more than 230 square feet in one hand-knotted panel, and the drawing holds its discipline the whole way: row after row of small compartments, each one a separate little picture, all of them balanced so the eye reads the floor as a single surface rather than a grid of parts. The wool has the dry, faintly lustrous handle of good highland fleece, the pile is full and even end to end, and the ivory selvedges and fringe are intact. It is one of the larger pieces in our oversize Persian rugs group, and it ships with a certificate of authenticity stating origin, materials and construction.

Design and Motifs

The field uses the khesti, or brick, layout: narrow ivory and gold lattice bands divide the whole surface into small rectangular compartments, and every compartment is filled with its own motif. Working across the rows you find flowering vases with paired birds, slim cypress trees, a weeping willow bending over a pool, curved boteh paisleys, 8 petal rosettes on a plain ground, and small tree of life sprays with serrated leaves. No two neighboring squares repeat their ground color or their filler, which is what keeps an all-over panel design of this size lively rather than mechanical. The main border is a broad ivory band of linked palmettes and curling vine scrolls, with birds worked into the vine at intervals, and it is flanked on both sides by fine floral guard stripes and a beaded meander that squares the 4 corners cleanly.

A Multi Color Palette Built on Ivory, Sky Blue and Brick Red

The palette is genuinely multi color, but it is organized rather than random. Ivory and soft cream carry the largest share of the compartments and the main border, which is what gives the rug its light overall cast. Against that sit squares of clear sky blue, warm brick red, deep burgundy, near black navy, and a saffron gold that reads almost apricot under lamplight. Smaller quantities of rose pink, moss green and terracotta appear inside the flowers and vases, and the lattice bands that separate the panels run a thin gold and ivory line that ties every block back to the border. Seen from across a room the blues and reds alternate in a soft checkerboard rhythm; seen up close the shading inside each blossom is where the color work shows, with two or three tones of blue used in one palmette. The photographs on wood floor and on white ground together give an honest reading of the range.

Bakhtiari Weaving in the Chahar Mahal Villages

Bakhtiari rugs come from the villages of the Chahar Mahal district in the Zagros highlands southwest of Isfahan, weaving centers such as Shalamzar, Saman and Chalshotor, where the garden panel plan has been the house design for well over a century. The tribal flocks that supply the wool graze at altitude, and that fleece is dense and springy, which is why Bakhtiari pile wears so well under furniture and foot traffic. Construction here follows the village standard, a firm cotton foundation with a wool pile knotted at a tension you can feel in the weight of the piece, though the drawing in the compartments and the border is noticeably finer and better resolved than ordinary market work of this type. At the 12 x 18 size class it is a rug built for a large formal room, and it was made to be walked on for generations rather than protected.
