This is a big, confident room filler: 12' x 14'11" of hand-knotted wool drawn in the classic Serapi manner, with a single navy medallion anchoring a wide orange red field and ivory spandrels opening the 4 corners. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, so the 3/8" pile still stands full height and the colors are at their strongest. At this scale the rug covers a 12 foot seating group or a 10 seat dining table with the chairs pulled out, which is exactly the job the format was drawn for, and it belongs with our oversize 12x15 rugs. Every piece ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is genuinely hand-knotted, together with its measurements, materials and origin.

Design and Motifs

The drawing is pure Serapi: a large stepped medallion with pointed pendants at head and foot, everything built from straight lines and angles rather than curves. Inside the navy medallion sits an ivory rosette ringed by 8 salmon and ivory palmettes, each one outlined in red and filled with small blossoms and hooked leaves. The field around it carries serrated leaves, standing cypress-like sprays, tulips and tiny birds, all set at a scale you can read from across the room. The ivory spandrels repeat the same vocabulary in green and rust, and the navy main border runs an alternating rhythm of palmettes, rosettes and split leaves between narrow reciprocal guard stripes. If you like geometric medallion rugs, this is the template they are all measured against.

Color: Orange Red Field, Navy Medallion, Ivory Corners

The field reads as a warm orange red, closer to terracotta and brick than to a cool cherry, with gentle tonal movement across the width where the wool takes the dye at slightly different strengths. Against it the medallion and main border are a deep inky navy, almost black in the corner photograph, which is what gives the rug its weight and keeps the red from shouting. The spandrels and the inner guard stripe are a soft buttery ivory that lifts the corners and frames the whole composition. Accent colors do the detail work: sage and olive green in the leaves, salmon and apricot in the palmettes, pale gold in the outlines, and small touches of aubergine and powder blue scattered through the border. Wool this clean takes light well, so the palette shifts noticeably between daylight and lamplight.

It is knotted by hand on a cotton foundation with a durable wool pile, and the reverse photograph shows even rows, clear knot definition and straight selvages, the signs of a loom that was kept in tension through all 15 feet of weaving. A Serapi drawing is unforgiving at this size because every line is straight, so any drift in the medallion or the border count would be obvious, and here the corners resolve cleanly. The result is a heavy, flat-lying, honest Oriental rug built for a busy room, with enough pile to take decades of traffic.
