A true square is one of the hardest formats to find in a hand-knotted rug, and this 9'9" x 10'1" piece fills that gap with the boldest drawing in the traditional repertoire. It is a new, never used Oriental rug, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation, with a heavy, springy pile that already feels settled underfoot. The Heriz Serapi layout reads perfectly in a square room because the medallion sits dead center and the 4 corner spandrels resolve evenly on every side. Design and Motifs

The center is a stepped, 8 point medallion built in navy and camel, with a small squared rosette at its heart and four hooked arms reaching out into pale blue outlines. Around it the field carries the angular vocabulary that defines this style of geometric rug: serrated leaves, ragged palmettes, small cypress forms and blossom heads drawn in straight lines rather than curves. Ivory spandrels fill the 4 corners with scrolling vine and split leaf forms, each one anchored by a red and green cartouche. The main border runs a classic turtle palmette and leaf meander on navy, framed by camel and pale blue guard stripes and a narrow reciprocal barber pole at the outer edge. Nothing is machine even here: small shifts in the drawing from one corner to the next are the signature of a rug tied by hand, knot by knot.

The Coral Red, Navy and Ivory Palette

The field is a warm coral rustic red, closer to brick and terracotta than to cherry, and it shifts slightly with the light as the pile lays in different directions. Against it, the border sits in a deep inky navy that grounds the whole square and keeps the red from dominating a room. Ivory does the heavy lifting in the corners and in the outline work, bright enough to read as cream in daylight and soft enough to stay warm under lamplight. Secondary tones do the rest: a mossy olive green in the leaf forms and rosettes, a soft sky blue running through the medallion arms and the smaller flowers, and a camel tan that bridges the ivory and the red. Small touches of dark brown and pale rose appear in the border blossoms. It is a palette that sits comfortably with wood floors, leather, brass and oatmeal upholstery.

India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted weaving is now done, and this rug shows why. The Heriz Serapi drawing is a historic village design, and Indian master weavers have spent decades learning to reproduce it with clean, disciplined lines while using long staple wool that holds color and resists crushing. The back, visible in the photographs, shows a tight, regular knot with the pattern reading clearly through to the cotton warps, which is the honest test of a hand-knotted piece. The pile is full and dense, the selvedges are firmly overcast and the fringes are the warps themselves. Among our hand-knotted Oriental rugs, this is a workhorse built for a busy room, and at close to 10 feet on both sides it was made for square spaces that standard rectangles never quite fit.
