Design and Motifs

The field is a classic Oushak all-over lattice: large angular palmettes and 8 petal rosettes strung on thin connecting vines, with serrated leaves, small cypress forms and stray blossoms filling the spaces between. Nothing is centered on a medallion, which is exactly why a rug this size works in an open plan, the pattern reads the same from any seat in the room. The main border carries alternating shield palmettes and upright leaf sprays, separated by small rosette octagons, and it is framed on both sides by narrow sawtooth guard stripes that give the whole layout a crisp edge. Look closely at the corners in the detail photos and you can see the weaver resolving the border by hand rather than mirroring it mechanically, a hallmark of genuine hand-knotted work.

Color

The ground is a cool ivory with a faint silver grey cast, the kind of neutral that keeps a large floor from feeling heavy. Against it the ornament runs through soft sky blue and a deeper teal blue, sage and grass green, mustard gold, warm rust and a muted pumpkin orange, with occasional touches of dusty rose in the rosette centers. The colors are pale and chalky rather than saturated, so the effect at a distance is an overall wash of light with just enough warmth to keep it from reading cold. Gold and rust carry the eye across the field, the blues cool it back down, and the greens hold the vine work together.
