Design and Motifs

There is no central medallion. The field runs as a continuous lattice of thin outlined ogees, each compartment holding an 8 petal rosette, a stepped star or a palmette, with long serrated leaves and small hooked vine forms filling the spaces between. The drawing is deliberately angular: straight stems, blunt tips, the slightly naive line that defines the Oushak look rather than the curved court style. Anchoring the field are 4 dark comb-like leaf figures placed along the vertical axis, a motif that reads almost architectural against the open gray ground. The main border carries a procession of large blossoms and fan-shaped palmettes on charcoal, framed on both sides by ivory guard stripes running a connected vine with tiny diamonds and arrow leaves. An additional ivory inner band separates border from field and gives the whole composition a clean, framed edge that photographs well in a big room.

Color: Silver Gray with Pastel Multicolor Accents

The field is a light silver gray with visible abrash, the natural tonal shift from one dye lot of hand-spun wool to the next, which keeps such a large expanse from looking flat. Against it the main border drops to a much darker charcoal gray, and the guard stripes and inner frame lift to a warm ivory with a sandy beige stripe. The accent palette is where this rug earns its personality: leaf green and a brighter mint through the vines, sky blue and a deeper teal in the rosette centers, burnt rust and orange in the star blossoms, plus soft peach and blush pink in the palmettes and outlines. Nothing is saturated enough to dominate; the overall read from standing height is gray and ivory, with the color revealing itself as you get closer. Made in India: Weaving and Quality

India is where most of the world's good contemporary hand-knotted work is now made, and this piece is a fair example of why. It was knotted by hand on a cotton foundation, knot by knot on the loom, with a wool pile clipped low enough to hold the fine outline work but left with enough body to wear well under furniture. The back, shown in the corner photo, reads clean and regular: even rows, a defined knot, no packing or glue, with the pattern legible from the reverse the way it should be on a genuine hand-knotted rug. The Oushak vocabulary itself comes out of western Anatolia, and Indian workshops have made it their own by pairing that angular, open drawing with well washed hand-spun wool and softer, more decorative dye tones.
