14' x 20' Grey Modern Oriental Rug | Tonal Striated Borderless Field | Oversize, Brand New
This is a quiet rug at an enormous scale: 280 square feet of hand-knotted wool in a single family of greys, with no medallion, no border and nothing to compete with the architecture of the room it lands in. At 14' x 20' it belongs in the small group of genuinely oversize hand-knotted rugs that can cover a great room, a long open-plan living and dining space, or a wide lobby without seams or fillers. The 3/8" wool pile is cut low and even, so the rug sits flat under heavy furniture and reads more like a woven textile floor than a plush carpet-style piece. It ships brand new, never used, with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted wool rug made in India.
Please Note About the Photographs:
The full-length photograph was shot under cooler light and reads a shade darker and bluer than the close-up images, which show the truer silver grey. The fine light and dark lines running through the field are intentional tonal variation in the hand-spun wool, not wear, not fading and not damage. Every rug is professionally steamed and pressed before it leaves our warehouse.
Design and Motifs
There is no field-and-border architecture here at all. The design is a single open ground carried edge to edge, drawn entirely out of striations: closely spaced lines of slightly lighter and slightly darker wool that run the length of the rug and shift every few inches. Look at the close-up photographs and you can follow individual lines for a foot or more before they dissolve into the tone around them, which is what gives a solid-field piece like this its movement. Because there is no repeating motif and no drawn ornament, the weaver's control of the wool is the whole design, and the low 3/8" clip keeps those lines crisp rather than blurred. It sits naturally alongside other modern and contemporary hand-knotted rugs and works as the calm base layer in a room that already has strong furniture, art or stone.
Color
The color is one family read three ways. The base is a mid silver grey, cool but not cold, closest to dove or pewter. Threaded through it are paler lines that lift toward soft ivory where the wool took less dye, and a small number of deeper grey lines that read almost slate when the light rakes across the pile. Under daylight the whole field looks bright and silvery, as in the close-up shots; under warmer evening light it settles down into a deeper, quieter grey, as in the full-length photograph. The folded corner shows the reverse, where the same grey appears as a flat, tight, near-ivory surface. There is no second accent color anywhere, no black, no beige overlay, which is exactly why this piece is easy to place: it takes on whatever whites, charcoals, walnuts or brass are already in the room. If you are working within a cool neutral scheme, compare it with the rest of our grey and charcoal rugs.
Origin and Weaving Quality
This rug was hand-knotted in India, which is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and we say that with confidence: the large workshops there have the loom width, the trained hands and the wool supply to build a 14 foot wide piece square and true, which very few weaving centers can still do. A solid-field Oriental rug is in some ways harder to weave than a busy one, because there is no pattern to hide an uneven row, a loose selvage or a wobble in the edge, and on a rug this long any drift would be obvious across 20 feet. The back photograph shows the result: tight even knotting, straight finished edges and a flat handle. Wool at this pile height on a cotton foundation is the practical choice for a room that gets real traffic, since a low, densely packed pile does not crush under a sofa leg or a dining chair. Oversize pieces like this often carry a freight surcharge elsewhere; here it ships free to all 50 states.
