2'6" x 20' Persian Runner Rug | All Over Floral Vine Scroll | Basil Green & Ivory | Excellent

Runners this long are not woven on speculation, they are woven because someone measured a hall and needed 20 feet of it. This one is a true 2'6" x 20" width of 30 inches carried the full 240 inches, hand-knotted in wool on a cotton foundation with a continuous all-over floral field in basil green framed by a wide ivory border. The pile stands at 3/8", firm underfoot and still full across the entire length, and the condition is excellent with the ivory fringe intact at the ends. Because the drawing repeats rather than centering on a medallion, the rug can be viewed from either end without ever looking cut off, which is exactly what you want in a corridor you walk in both directions. It ships with our certificate of authenticity confirming the hand-knotted Persian construction, materials and measurements.

Please Note About the Photographs:

The full-length photograph was taken under bright studio light and reads as a lighter, brighter green than the rug actually is. The close-up images shot on a wood floor are the accurate reading: the field is a deep basil green with a pine cast, and the border is a warm ivory rather than a cool white.

Design and Motifs

The field is an all-over floral lattice built from thin curling vine scrolls that link one repeat to the next, each unit centered on an 8 petal rosette with split leaves and small palmettes budding off the stems. Serrated lancet leaves curve back on themselves in the classic Persian manner, and between them sit little four-part blossoms and angular flowerheads that give the green ground steady rhythm rather than a single focal point. The main border is drawn on ivory: an alternating run of upright palmettes and cross-form flowerheads joined by a slender connecting vine, with the corners resolved cleanly so the pattern turns without a break. Narrow guard stripes in wine red and green edge the border on both sides and hold the composition tight along 20 feet of length, and the same guard stripe repeats at the ends where the pile meets the fringe.

Basil Green and Ivory Color Palette

Green grounds are uncommon in Persian weaving, which is what makes this runner worth looking at twice. The field is a deep basil green, a herbal shade with a pine undertone that turns cooler in shade and warmer under lamplight, and the wool takes it with a soft sheen visible in the close-up photographs. Against it the vine work is drawn in ivory, pale sage and a chalky celadon, so the scrolls read clearly without glaring. The accents do the rest of the work: rust orange and terracotta on the palmettes, deep wine red and burgundy at the flower centers, touches of soft peach and dusty rose on the petals, and very dark navy-black shading inside the border flowerheads. The ivory main border is warm and slightly buttery rather than white, which keeps the whole scheme on the antique side, and the ivory cotton fringe carries that same tone to the ends.

Persian Origin and Weaving Quality

Made in Persia and hand-knotted throughout, with the reverse showing even rows of knots, straight selvages and a cotton warp and weft holding the length true, no ripple or draw after 20 feet, which is the hardest thing to achieve on a narrow loom. Wool is spun with enough body to stand up to traffic yet fine enough to draw a curved vine and a 8 petal rosette cleanly, the mark of a workshop weaver following a cartoon rather than working from memory. Long runners take a disciplined loom and a patient weaver: the pattern has to repeat identically dozens of times and the width has to stay at 30 inches from the first knot to the last. At this length it is a piece for a full corridor, a gallery landing or a stair hall, and it is worth measuring your long hallway runner space before it goes, because 20 foot Persian runners in excellent condition rarely come through twice in the same colorway.

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
