5'4" x 7'8" Persian Tabriz Rug | Ivory Field, Rust Floral Medallion | Wool & Silk Pile, Never Used
This 5'4" x 7'8" rug comes from the workshops of Tabriz in northwest Persia, and it is the kind of piece those looms are known for: a quiet ivory ground, a tightly drawn rust medallion, and flower work fine enough that you can follow a single stem from the center out to the border. The pile is wool with silk worked into the highlights, which is why the pale greens, salmons and ivories shift and catch the light as you walk past, while the wool keeps the surface firm underfoot. It is brand new and has never been on a floor, with crisp selvages, even ends and full pile, as the fold shots and corner shots show. Every rug we sell leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and size.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a round rust medallion built around an 8 petal rosette, ringed by curling arabesques, small palmettes and a pale ivory halo that lifts it off the field. Above and below the medallion sit matching pendant palmettes on the long axis, and the 4 corners are filled with soft mauve spandrels that repeat the medallion flowers at a smaller scale. The open ivory field between them is not empty: it carries an all over spray of roses, carnations, hyacinths, split leaves and slender vines, all drawn in the curved Tabriz manner where no line is allowed to go stiff. The main border is a continuous rust vine with alternating rosettes and cupped palmettes, flanked by narrow ivory guard stripes of tiny flower heads and finished with a plain ivory outer band, a detail you can see clearly in the border close-up.
The Color Story
The field is a warm ivory, closer to cream than to white, and it does the heavy lifting here by making every other color read clearly. Against it the rust of the medallion and main border runs toward terracotta, warming to salmon where the silk highlights sit and cooling to a dusty mauve in the corner spandrels. The flowers bring rose pink, raspberry, lilac and a deep aubergine in the smaller blossoms, with light sky blue and a few notes of navy for contrast, and olive to sage green through the leaves and stems. Near black outlines separate the motifs so the drawing stays sharp rather than blurring together. Nothing in the palette is loud, which is why pieces like this sit easily in rooms with oak or walnut floors, and why buyers shopping ivory and beige Persian rugs keep coming back to Tabriz weaving.
Tabriz and Its Weaving Standard
Tabriz sits in the northwest corner of Persia and has been a commercial weaving center for centuries, long enough that it developed its own grading language: fineness is counted in Raj, the number of knots across a gereh of roughly 2.75 inches of width, so weavers and dealers there talk about a rug's quality in numbers rather than adjectives. What that discipline buys you is visible in this piece, in the clean curve of the vine scroll, the symmetry of the 4 spandrels and the way the medallion closes perfectly on both axes. The structure is the city standard as well, a cotton foundation with the wool and silk pile clipped low so the drawing stays legible, which is exactly what you want in a design this detailed at a 5'4" x 7'8" scale.
