Every knot is tied by hand on a cotton foundation, the pile is wool, and the drawing is tight enough that the floral heads read clearly from standing height rather than blurring into pattern. It has never been used: the pile still stands full, the white cotton fringe is clean and even, and the side finishes are straight. Design and Motifs

The layout is the classical formula, executed with real discipline. A round floral medallion holds the center, built from a small rosette core, a ring of layered petals, and a scalloped outline finished in gold. Above and below it sit two pendant crowns, and the 4 corners carry matching spandrels so the eye is pulled back to the middle from any direction. The ivory field around the medallion is not empty: it carries a dense all over floral network of curling vines, serrated leaves, split palmettes, cypress like sprays and small 8 petal rosettes, all mirrored across the long axis. The border system runs 5 bands deep: a slim inner guard, a wide main border of red ground filled with palmettes and blue and lavender flower heads, a lighter mauve band of scrolling vine, and narrow outer guards that frame the whole thing cleanly.

The Color Palette: Ivory, Burgundy, Green and Blue

The field is a warm ivory, closer to soft cream than white, which is why this belongs with the best ivory and beige area rugs for a room that needs brightness without glare. Against it the medallion works in dusty rose and brick red with a deeper burgundy core, outlined in soft gold. A sage to olive green surrounds the field as a wide open band, and that green is what keeps the rug from reading as a red rug: it cools the whole center and picks up the leafwork. The main border is a deep burgundy red, and inside it the small flower heads carry clear medium blue and deep navy, with lavender and mauve tones in the secondary band and cream and pale gold in the vine scrolls. Small black notes in the palmette centers give the pattern its definition. Origin and Weaving Quality

This rug was made in China, in a workshop weaving the curvilinear medallion tradition that defines a classic Oriental rug, and the workmanship is the reason to look at it twice. The reverse, photographed against a ruler, shows fine and very regular knotting on tightly packed cotton warps, with the pattern reading almost as crisply from the back as from the front. That density is what allows the curved vine and the scalloped medallion outline to be drawn as smooth arcs instead of stepped lines, and it is also what makes the rug hard wearing: a close, compact weave with a short even clipped pile holds its drawing under furniture and foot traffic for decades. The wool has a quiet sheen where the light crosses it, the ends are finished in plain woven kilim with a small floral band before the fringe, and the selvages are wrapped evenly along both sides.
