6'5" x 10' Tabriz Mahi Design Rug | Pom Red Herati Fish Field | Wool & Silk, Brand New

This is a brand new, never used 6'5" x 10' hand-knotted rug woven in the Tabriz Mahi idiom, with a pom red herati field, a scalloped ivory medallion and a wide ivory border of linked palmettes. The pile is wool with silk, and you can see where the silk sits: the medallion outlines and the small flower heads catch the light at a different angle than the wool around them. The weave is fine and even, the pile is clipped low so the tiny fish motifs stay legible, and the selvedges and cotton fringe are clean and untouched. As with every piece we sell, it ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it is a genuine Oriental rug, knotted entirely by hand.

Design and Motifs

Mahi means fish, and the name comes from the herati unit repeated across the field: a small rosette inside a diamond, flanked by 4 curved lanceolate leaves that look like fish circling the flower. Here that unit is drawn very small and marched edge to edge in a strict lattice, which is exactly what makes this an all-over design rather than a simple open-field rug. A pointed oval medallion sits dead center with a scalloped ivory outline, a stepped inner cartouche and a single rosette at its core, and it is answered by matching pendants above and below and by 4 corner spandrels that repeat the same scalloped edge. The main border carries alternating palmettes and rounded florals on an ivory ground, fenced by narrow guard stripes of running vine. Nothing in the drawing is careless: the lattice stays square from end to end, and the corners resolve cleanly, which is the first thing to check on any Mahi.

The Pom Red, Ivory and Green Palette

The field is a deep pom red, a true cool red rather than an orange brick, and because the herati lattice is picked out in ivory, black and pale gold, the red reads as a rich textured ground instead of a flat block of color. The medallion and spandrels shift to a warm sand and cafe brown, with the innermost cartouche in clean ivory so the eye lands there first. Through the border you get soft sage and olive green in the vine work, muted slate blue in the flower centers, and touches of terracotta and rose in the palmettes, all set against a creamy ivory that keeps the whole rug from feeling heavy. The silk content lifts the lighter tones: the sand and ivory areas of the medallion appear noticeably brighter from one end of the rug and quieter from the other. It is a palette that sits easily with cherry and walnut furniture, warm white walls, brass and dark leather.

Made in India in the Tabriz Mahi Tradition

This rug was made in India, and that is a recommendation rather than a caveat. India is where most of the world's best contemporary hand-knotted work is now produced, and the top Indian workshops weave the classic Mahi cartoon at a knot count fine enough to hold motifs this small, on a tight cotton foundation with a wool and silk pile. You can see the result in the detail photos: straight rows, a compact back, and fish motifs that stay crisp instead of blurring into the ground. At 6'5" x 10' it works as a main-room rug under a seating group or a dining table, and it slots comfortably into the 7x10 size class when you are measuring a space.
