6'6" x 10'6" Persian Tabriz Rug | Cream Floral Medallion | 400 KPSI, Never Used
This 6'6" x 10'6" Persian Tabriz was woven in the 2000s and has never been put down on a floor, so the pile still stands full height and the cream ground has none of the grey that footfall eventually brings. The weave runs at approximately 400 knots per square inch on a cotton foundation with a fine wool pile, which is the level at which a Tabriz workshop can draw a curved vine without breaking it into steps. The ruler photograph shows how tightly the rows are packed at the edge and how evenly the ivory fringe was finished. It is a true room size piece that reads as formal without being heavy, and it sits comfortably among 7x10 Persian rugs for a seating group or a 6 chair dining table. Every rug we ship leaves Freeport with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and knot count.
Design and Motifs
The layout is the classic Tabriz medallion and corner formula, drawn with unusual density. At the center sits a lobed, sunburst edged medallion with a small ivory rosette core, filled with paired palmettes and curling split leaves. Around it the cream field carries a continuous all-over vine: lotus heads, carnations, serrated acanthus leaves and small shield shaped blossoms, with a vase and palmette cluster set on the long axis above and below the medallion. Each of the 4 corners is filled with a salmon toned spandrel outlined in a thin pearl line, and the spandrel drawing mirrors the medallion rather than repeating a generic filler. The main border runs large palmettes alternating with leopard spotted rosettes and curved vine stems, framed on both sides by a narrow reciprocal guard stripe and a fine pearl line. Nothing is left blank, and the symmetry holds cleanly from end to end.
A Cream Field With Sage Green and Rust
The field is a warm cream, closer to clotted ivory than white, and it carries the whole design without glare. Against it the main border reads as a soft sage to sea green, a muted tone with a faint grey in it, and the medallion picks up a slightly deeper olive green so the two relate without matching. The corner spandrels are a dusty salmon rust that warms the ends of the rug, and the flower heads scattered through the field move through soft brick red, terracotta, pale beige and a clear mid blue that lifts the palette and keeps the greens from going flat. Browns and near black outlines define the leaf work and give the drawing its crispness, while cream and pale peach highlights appear inside the larger palmettes. Note that the first overview photograph has a green cast from the lighting; the showroom shots are the truer reading. Buyers working with a light scheme can see it alongside other ivory and beige Persian rugs.
Tabriz Origin and Weaving Quality
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the commercial and technical capital of Persian weaving for centuries, the city that supplied cartoons, dyers and master weavers to much of the trade. Tabriz workshops count fineness in Raj, the number of knots per gereh of about 2.75 in measured across the width: 40 Raj is ordinary commercial work, 50 Raj is fine, and roughly 60 Raj corresponds to about 400 knots per square inch, the grade of this rug and the point where collectors start paying attention. That count is what allows the thin pearl outlines, the unbroken vine stems and the tiny rosette at the heart of the medallion to hold their shape instead of blurring. The pile is clipped low in the Tabriz manner, the handle is firm rather than floppy, and the selvedges and fringe are finished to workshop standard, all of which point to a well run atelier rather than a village loom.
