8' x 9'7" Persian Tabriz Rug | Cream Floral Medallion with Birds | 400 KPSI Wool and Silk, Never Used
This 8' x 9'7" Tabriz was woven as a fine workshop piece and never put into use, so the pile still stands full and the cotton fringe is untouched. The drawing is the reason to own it: a cream ground carrying an unbroken lattice of curved vine, a small burgundy and taupe rosette medallion at the center, and birds hidden among the blossoms. At roughly 400 knots per square inch in wool with silk highlights, it sits well above ordinary commercial weaving while staying a practical room size, one of the more useful proportions among 8x10 Persian rugs. Every rug we ship leaves with a certificate of authenticity recording origin, materials and weave.
Design and Motifs
The center holds a compact medallion built in layers: an 8 petal rosette in green and gold, set in a deep red cruciform panel, wrapped in a soft taupe cartouche frame with paired pendants reaching up and down the length. From there the field opens into dense Shah Abbasi palmettes, feathered saz leaves, small five petal blossoms and grape clusters, all strung on a thin red vine that keeps curving rather than repeating in blocks. Look closely at the field and the border and you find pictorial detail: long tailed birds perched mid vine, a pair of pheasants facing a blossoming stem, and a small browsing deer worked into the camel main border. Corner spandrels are drawn as quarter medallions so the field reads as one continuous garden, and the border system runs 5 bands deep, a wide pictorial main border between narrow reciprocal guard stripes and a fine rosette meander at the outer edge.
Cream, Sage Green and Camel: The Color Reading
The field is a warm cream, closer to undyed ivory wool than to white, which lets the silk accented flowerheads read clearly instead of fighting the ground. Around the field corners the palette shifts into a muted sage green, dusty and slightly grey rather than bright, and that green runs up into the spandrels where it meets a mushroom brown panel. The main border is camel to light tobacco, filled with rose pink cartouches, brick red outlines and small ivory blossoms. Accent notes repeat across the whole surface in restrained quantities: brick and burgundy red in the vine and petal tips, powder blue and teal in the palmette hearts, olive and mustard in the leaves, and near black outlining that gives every flower a crisp edge. Nothing here is loud. The overall impression from across a room is cream and soft green with warm brown framing, and the reds only declare themselves at the medallion.
Tabriz Weaving at 400 Knots Per Square Inch
Tabriz sits in northwest Persia and has been the country's design capital for centuries, the place where cartoons are drawn and where weavers are trained to follow a curved line without breaking it. Fineness there is counted in Raj, knots per gereh across the width, and a weave of approximately 400 knots per square inch corresponds to about 60 Raj, the level workshops reserve for pieces meant to hold detailed floral drawing. You can see what that buys in the photographs: bird beaks, individual grape berries and hairline vine stems that a coarser weave would smear. The pile is wool carried on a cotton foundation with silk used selectively to lift highlights, a combination explained further in our guide to Persian silk rugs, and the back shows even, tightly packed rows with straight selvages and no correction. Unused, tightly woven and fully signed off by our own inspection, it is ready to lay down as it is.
