6'7" x 9'4" Persian Tehran Rug | Berry Red Floral Medallion | Fine Wool Pile, Excellent Condition

City weaving from the Persian capital rarely comes to market, and this one arrives in excellent condition with the drawing still sharp from edge to edge. It is hand-knotted in fine wool on a cotton foundation, clipped to a short 3/8" pile that lets the small blossoms and the lobed navy medallion read clearly rather than blurring into the ground. At 6'7" x 9'4" it falls into the 6x9 Persian rugs range that suits a sofa grouping or a 6 chair table without crowding the walls. The selvedges are intact, the ends are even, and the handle is firm and flat. Every rug we ship carries our certificate of authenticity documenting origin, materials and hand-knotted construction.

Design and Motifs

The center holds an 8 petal rosette drawn in ivory and two values of blue, ringed by small rose blossoms and set on a navy lobed medallion with curling cloudband arms. Above and below the medallion, pendant sprays of pale blue 5 petal blossoms and slim green leaves trail into open field, a formal arrangement rather than a scattered one. The berry red field is cut as a scalloped reserve, its outline stepping and curving around the medallion, and that reserve floats inside a light blue ground filled with fine scrolling vine, palmettes and tiny floral rosettes. The main border is navy, carrying alternating ivory cartouches and rose palmettes linked by continuous vinework, flanked by ivory guard stripes of repeating pink and blue flowerheads. All 4 corners resolve cleanly, which is a good indicator of a workshop cartoon followed carefully by an experienced weaver.

Color Palette

The field is a berry red, cooler and slightly pink in cast than the brick reds of village weaving, and it photographs deeper under low light and brighter where the pile catches daylight. Against it the medallion and main border sit in a dark inky navy that gives the layout its weight, while the spandrel ground is a soft cornflower blue that lifts the whole piece and keeps it from reading heavy. Ivory does the outlining work, in the rosette petals, the cartouches and the guard stripes, and rose pink carries most of the flowers, with sage green leaves, pale sky blue buds and a few small gold and olive highlights in the palmettes. That combination of berry and navy with blue and ivory relief places it comfortably among red and burgundy Persian rugs while staying cooler and more tailored than most.

Tehran Origin and Weaving Quality

Tehran weaving belongs to the city workshop tradition of the capital, where small ateliers worked to drawn cartoons and the finest spun wool available, and output was always limited compared with the big commercial weaving centers of Persia. That scarcity is why Tehran pieces turn up so seldom in the trade. The reverse of this rug, shown against a ruler in the final photograph, reveals tight even rows on a cotton warp with no pulled or slack areas, the kind of disciplined knotting that holds a curved line through a pendant spray. The pile is fine, short and dense, so the rug lies perfectly flat, resists crushing under furniture legs, and keeps the fine floral detail legible rather than softening it over time.

Ask about this rug

This piece is the only one of it, so the things worth knowing about it are particular to it. If you want to talk through the size, the colour in your own light, or the weave, speak to someone here first.
