6'8" x 10' Persian Kashan Rug | Cream Floral Field with Navy Medallion | 1980s, Excellent Condition

This is the classic central Persian formula turned inside out: instead of the usual red ground, the weaver laid the whole field in a warm cream wool and let the navy medallion and deep red spandrels do the anchoring. The result is a lighter, roomier looking rug than most Persian Kashan rugs of the same period, which is exactly why cream ground examples are the first ones to sell. It dates to the 1980's, the pile still stands a full 3/8" high across the whole surface with no low spots, the selvages are tight and the cotton fringe is original at both ends. At 6'8" x 10' it sits comfortably in the 7x10 Persian rug class that fits most living rooms without crowding the walls. Design and Motifs

A navy lobed medallion sits dead center, built around a terracotta rosette core with gold palmettes and curling vine work radiating out of it, and it finishes top and bottom in long pendants tipped with small floral cartouches. The cream field around it is not left open: it is filled edge to edge with scrolling stems, tulip heads, carnations, rounded blossoms and split leaves, drawn in mirror symmetry so the two halves of the rug answer each other exactly. Four red spandrels close off the corners with their own dense arabesque, and the transition from cream to red is outlined in a fine dark line that keeps the drawing crisp. The main border runs navy with a repeating palmette and rosette procession in ivory, red and gold, flanked by narrow guard stripes carrying a zigzag meander. Count the small details on the field and you see the hand of a trained cartoon drawer, not a village improviser.

A Cream Field Framed in Navy and Red

The ground is a soft ivory cream with a faint golden warmth to it, the kind of tone that reads almost buttery under lamplight and closer to bone white in daylight. Against it the medallion and the main border are a deep inky navy that photographs as near black in the overall shots, and the spandrels and outer edge are a true cool brick red rather than an orange red. The flower heads are where the palette opens up: soft powder blue, sage and forest green, honey gold, dusty rose brown, beige and small touches of burgundy, all outlined in navy so nothing bleeds into the cream. There is a gentle abrash across the field typical of hand-dyed wool from this era, visible as a slight shift in the cream tone as the light travels across the pile. With navy, red and warm neutrals all present, the rug sits naturally with dark wood floors, ivory upholstery and navy accents.

Kashan: Central Persia's Court Weaving Town

Kashan lies in central Persia, north of Isfahan, and its looms trace back to the Safavid court workshops that produced some of the most celebrated carpets ever woven. The town's reputation rests on two things: soft lustrous local wool that takes dye deeply and holds a sheen for decades, and a disciplined curvilinear drawing style that never slips into the angular.
