6' x 6'3" Round Oriental Rug | Black Floral Medallion | Hand-Knotted Wool & Silk

This is a genuinely round piece, 6' x 6'3" across, hand-knotted in a traditional floral medallion layout on a jet black field. The pile is wool with silk highlights over a cotton foundation, which is why the ivory and gold drawing catches the light differently as you walk around it. Circles are harder to weave than rectangles, since every row changes length and the weaver has to hold the curve true from the first inch to the last, and here the outline stays clean the whole way around with the fringe finished by hand in a tight braided edge. Condition is excellent and the rug has never been used. It ships with a certificate of authenticity confirming it as a hand-knotted piece.

Design and Motifs

The center holds a small 8 petal rosette inside a beige disc, ringed by a scalloped medallion of split leaves and burgundy tendrils that radiates outward like a sunburst. Beyond it the black field is filled edge to edge with a dense all over lattice of vine work: palmettes, rosettes, tiny 5 petal blossoms and curled leaves, with a ring of pointed cypress-like finials pressing inward from the beige inner band. The border system is layered rather than simple, running from a fine dark outer stripe through a pair of blue and ivory guard stripes into a wide burgundy main border carrying alternating floral bouquets and standing palmettes, then back through another guard stripe into the field. Because the format is round, the design reads as concentric rings, and the eye keeps returning to the medallion from whichever side you stand.

Color Detail: Black, Burgundy and Ivory

The field is a true deep black, close to ink, and it does the heavy lifting here by making every light color on top of it look brighter than it actually is. Against it the vines are drawn in soft sage and olive green, the blossoms in ivory, cream, straw gold, dusty rose and terracotta, with occasional slate blue flower heads that keep the palette from going warm all the way through. The medallion and the inner band shift to a warm beige and camel tone, outlined in ivory, with burgundy scrollwork tracing through it. The main border is a deep oxblood burgundy, browner than the accents in the field, and the guard stripes carry a narrow indigo blue and ivory chain that separates each zone cleanly. Silk highlights sit mainly in the ivory and pale gold areas, so those details read as almost white in raking light and drop back to cream when viewed straight on. The hand-tied fringe is natural ivory cotton.
