8' x 8' Round Oriental Rug | Ivory Floral Medallion | Wool & Silk, Excellent Condition

A true circle at 8' x 8', this hand-knotted piece is the kind of round that decorators hunt for and rarely find in this quality. The pile is fine wool carrying silk highlights, knotted on a cotton foundation, and the drawing is fully curvilinear: a concentric floral medallion at dead center, rings of vine work radiating outward, and three floral borders closing the circle with even, perfectly true edges. Condition is excellent and the rug has never been used, with full pile depth and clean ivory fringe all the way around. Larger true rounds are scarce because the loom work is unforgiving, and the field of 8x8 round rugs at this weave level is small. Design and Motifs

The layout is built entirely from the center out, which is exactly what a round design should do. The core is an 8 petal rosette inside a burgundy ground, wrapped by a ring of small sage green cartouches and cream arabesque tracery, then by a lobed gold outline studded with heart-shaped sage palmettes. From there the ivory field opens into a dense all-over garden: large gold and sage palmettes, split-leaf rosettes, small five petal blossoms and slender dark brown vine stems that sweep in concentric arcs rather than straight rows, so the eye travels around the circle instead of stopping at a corner. A narrow sage green band carries a procession of upright flowering sprays, and beyond it the wide camel-gold main border runs a repeating vine of burgundy carnations, ivory blossoms and green leaves, finished by two slim floral guard stripes. There are 4 minor ring divisions in total, and the drawing stays clean and legible even in the smallest border flowers, which is where a fine weave shows itself.

The Ivory, Sage and Gold Palette

Ivory is the governing color here, a warm cream rather than a cold white, and it lights up the whole field so the rug reads bright in a room with only lamp light. Against it sits a soft, dusty sage green used for the inner ring, the leaf work and the narrow secondary band, a color that behaves almost like a neutral next to greige walls and oak flooring. The main border shifts to a deeper camel gold, giving the circle a visible edge without a hard dark outline, and the silk highlights in the palmettes and rosettes catch light at a different angle than the wool so the golds appear to change tone as you walk around the rug. Accents come in muted burgundy and terracotta at the flower heads, with smoky slate blue and ivory in a few blossoms for contrast, all held together by dark brown to near black outlining on the vines. There is no high-contrast, saturated red anywhere; the entire scheme is quiet, warm and slightly faded in feel, which is why it settles easily over wood floors and beside cream, taupe or olive upholstery.

Origin and Weaving Quality

This is an authentic hand-knotted Oriental rug made in China, from the workshop tradition that produces the country's finest traditional floral weaves. Knot by knot work on a round loom is harder than on a rectangle: the weaver has to shorten and lengthen every row to hold the curve, keep the borders concentric and keep the medallion centered, and any drift shows immediately as an oval. On this piece the circle is true, the border rings stay parallel and the medallion sits dead center. The back and fringe photograph shows the fineness of the knotting, the tight cotton warps and the hand-tied selvage finish, with a small, dense knot that allows the fine floral detail and the silk highlights to be drawn without blurring. The wool is well spun with a good natural sheen and the pile is short, which keeps the pattern crisp and makes the rug wear slowly under a dining table or in a foyer. Excellent, never used condition means you are buying the weave exactly as it left the loom.
